I think that’s been a problem with her new role as Twilight’s pupil. I don’t think we see enough of the personality she had when she was a villain and an ideologue. I’d be more invested in her new role if I could recognize the original Starlight in her.

hard to believe she was the same communist pone that nearly destroyed Equestria

Not that I didn’t like her like that.
But look how nice and cute she is now!

Yeah, a sudden heel-face-turn is definitely not my cup of tea.
I prefer the way it is dealt with in Dragon Ball Z.
Hero shows mercy, villain shows a good side, make uneasy alliances, fighting a common enemy together and only after a ton of shared struggle, will the villain finally join the good team.
I always liked the idea of villains converting to good–I grow up with that kind of stories all the time in my culture, but the execution is always the determining factor on how soon would I accept the change.

Imagine going to the family reunion of a family that’s not yours. That’s the kind awkwardness Starlight seems to be feeling here.

Here’s how I see it
Twilight leaeprned about friendship. And as she got smarter, she became an Alicorn. I seen it as her being in the next stage. And now she is a teacher. I like Glimmer being her student. It the next phase of her character

@Joshua
The hardest part about taking the time to understand others, imho, is trying to fight the urge to disagree or counter-argue. It’s important to listen and show you understand. Empathy helps a lot.

Thinking more on this, here’s some reasoning for why people feel the way they do about Starlight.

Some people weigh other factors far more heavily than how cute a character might appear in a few scenes. It’s apparent that a cute character is all it takes to win you over, but others need to be won over in different ways. For instance, the resolution in the S5 finale was a complete Heel-Face Turn for Starlight. It was so sudden and complete that it left some folks reeling. It felt unconvincing to some; a Heel-Face Turn done improperly can forcefully disengage some people from the story. When people feel they are disengaged from a story or a character, it’s very hard to buy back into that character or story.

If it was done in a better, more convincing way, I think more people would be on board by a character’s cute antics. Currently, though, for some people it’s like a bright flashing light and alarm, still. It’s very hard to believe or want to believe Starlight is “good”. Or, we’re cognizant that the character is supposed to be “good”, but all some people can remember is the very dissatisfying way in which that story was delivered. It takes away from the sincerity of the show.
