I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a crash like that. I’m guessing you’ve already tried redownloading and reinstalling?

There was a bug causing users to crash on startup some time back, but that’s long since been fixed. If this is a consistent issue, you may need to provide Inky with more specific details so he can find the root of it.

as as well as this one:

The development, I’m afraid, is on hiatus due to certain copyright issues with Google Play.
…
Basically, it’s this thing all over again:

What would you say the progress of this app is?It is going to receive fixes for critical issues (e.g. startup crashes), but no upcoming features are planned.
…
If anyone’s willing to maintain the project, feel free to contact me and I’ll try to offer some help and advice.

App is broken again. Getting an endless loop of “Yikes!”.
Oh. And now I see it’s abandoned. Splendid.
Every single goddamn booru app is being thrown into shitter. Is it a tradition or something? To abandon booru apps sooner or later?

Yeah, the app is unfortunately no longer functional nor maintained. Keep in mind though, it was designed when the site looked like this and was not really mobile friendly.
The new site layout, which also was designed by DeliciousBlackInk (the coder of the mobile app), is much more mobile friendly than the previous one. I would recommend using that.

- There’s no ability to show only the picture on a uniformly-coloured background (preferably black, but white was doing the job) with maybe voting, favourite and download buttons visible
- There’s no swiping between the pictures, you have to tap the arrow and wait for the whole site to reload.
- The picture isn’t the focus, you have to scroll down each time. When I want to use the full functionality of the site, I do it on my PC. When I use it on mobile, I want to browse the pics - nothing more, nothing less.
While I agree that the site is usable on mobile, it’s still a far, far cry from what the app was. Even with the inability to swipe between pictures it was still a cleaner, more targeted solution.

While I can’t say that it will happen in the near future since there’s only a few of us developers, we will try to add those features and changes to the site itself later on.

Thanks for considering it, although I still stand by my opinion, that a dedicated app would’ve been the way to go.

The guy who was working on it decided to discontinue development, and no one else took it over. As the site continued to change over time, stuff on the app broke.

ah I see, well, I started working on a new app from scratch and am wondering if anyone has interest in helping me out, as i have little knowledge of the Android APIs, tho I am familiar with Java

To be honest, you’re better off doing it in Kotlin. It deals with the worst of Java and has a bright future ahead, seeing how it was chosen by Google as a second language for Android development.
The very thought of starting a large (well, large for a single hobbyist developer anyway) Java project nowadays greatly disturbs me.

There’s been a fork of the derpibooru app, but, guess what, abandoned as well. Last commit was 4 months ago, the app itslef doesn’t even install, the author has issue tracking disabled.
Guess if you want the job done, you have to do it yourself.

“Functional enough” doesn;t mean “as functional as a dedicated app”.
Or rather, the mobile site is too functional. I don’t really need all those links, buttons, tabs, white space, scrolling, and whatnot. I want to launch the app, input a couple of tags, tap a button, and swipe left and right to browse the images.
Mobile site still requires you to wait for a page to load, then you need to scroll down because why would the image be the focus, then you need to scroll back up, tap a minuscule arrow, wait for a page to load… You get what I’m getting at.

My problem with the mobile site vs a dedicated app is that we still don’t have swiping between images. Sure we’ve got arrows at the top of the page to switch between results, but that requires an entire new page load, and those arrows can be hard to reach one handed on larger phones.
I recommend y’all check out the app Nori. It can browse booru-type boards, features swiping between search results, and still has access to image tags. Unfortunately it doesn’t work with Derpibooru currently as it can’t detect an API, but that app is how I’d imagine the search function of a dedicated app working at least.

But I’m not sure how feasible that is, given you’d need quite a bit of help from the site’s devs, and I’m not sure if any of them would be interested or have the time for such a project. But if you’re determined, you can always make a thread about it.

Not a mobile app, but I managed to create a desktop Derpibooru viewer. Uses embedded Chromium, so it can display any file (including .webm and .mp4) and caches them properly (or so the Cef documentation would imply).
It’s still not that great, but hey, it works: https://github.com/Atulin/DerpiViewer
Now I need to make use of the Kotlin tutorial I got on Udemy, and translate my skills there.

If any of you are still looking for a mobile app to use, I am a dev for a mobile app called Booru Nav.
