It's just as ludicrous to claim G5 isn't a sequel to G4, considering the pilot movie opens with a flashback of the G4 Mane Six on an adventure, all looking and sounding exactly like they did in G4. Not to mention Canterlot and Discord in the G5 comics.
G5 is 100% canon to G4.
