Was a rock.
The point of the story was a philosophical one. Life cannot be solved by a simple equation, it makes no sense. That was what Douglas Adams was hoping people would take from the story, but they kept asking him for the meaning to it and trying to assign a math reason to it. Even talking about base 13 math to solve it, this just frustrated Adams so he refused to elaborate any further right to the day he died,; he took his meaning with him.
