I never understood the Emoji franchise in general, not just the movie.
 
Basically, they took popular emotes/emoticons/smileys (remember when they were called that?) from all over the internet from the past 20 years, gave 'em a slightly distinct redesign, copyright them as "Emojis," then make a whole merchandise cash-cow franchise out of them.


 
That's like... How after "Roller-Blade" skates became popular, they rebranded old roller-skates as "Four-wheelers," as if they were something completely new, and unique. Or when the fruit "Trix" cereal went back to their old ball-shapes after using the fruit shapes for so long, they marketed the circular shapes as "brand new," despite the fact, that's how they originally looked decades ago.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, there's bad 2D films, and good 3D ones too. I just like seeing more art styles. If 2D were more common, I'd probably miss CGI/3D. I guess some judge books by their cover still.
