Perhaps. But there’s no doubt OP was trying to start s***. Unless he’s completely lost touch with reality, he knew what he was doing when he chose Starlight for this.

Still, there is no Starlight drama. Just Starlight getting hurt. It’s dark comedy.

I’d say this particular image is a bit more than just Starlight suffering a misfortune. She’s literally being crushed here. If there were no cartoon physics at work here, she’d probably be dead or at the very least paralyzed.

Are people going to tag random images where Starlight gets the short end of the stick “Starlight Drama” now?

Starlight can be neutralized as a participant in the plot by a well placed baseball bat to the back of the head. Discord requires bullshit plot shenanigans.

If I was to choose between him not showing up (again) and being worfed so the villain is actually a threat, I prefer if he was nowhere near the movie.

Obviously I don’t know the full extent of her role (no one does), but Starlight having only a minor or even cameo appearance is certainly a fair assumption at this point. The movie has always placed a heavy emphasis on the mane 6, and in the official trailer we only ever see the mane 6 and Spike go adventuring.

And now you’re just misconstruing my words. By minority I simply meant that there are still significantly more people who enjoy or are neutral to her character than there are individuals who actively dislike her. Never did I say the minority was never acknowledged. We all know full well that you guys are out there.

Maybe not as far as detrimental, but you did claim that there would be noticeable negative consequences from a one second cameo of Starlight in the trailer. While not everyone will be pleased with seeing her even for that brief moment, it’s not nearly as bad as you seem to be making it out to be.

Sure, there are many other recognizable background characters present too, but Starlight, with her role in the show, carries far more weight than them.

Opinions on her character certainly differ, but it’s not as mixed a reception as you think it is. People are just more vocal when it comes to debating her merits and flaws. I’d doubt DHX/Hasbro would be pushing her character the way they have the controversy was really that severe. It might dampen the hype for some people, but it’s not going to be any sort of major issue.

There’s no denying that DHX/Hasbro has made questionable choices in the past, but it’s almost certain they would never do something that they know would significantly reduce the public’s interest in the franchise.

Your standpoint isn’t exactly free from assumptions either. If you want to end this and agree to disagree, that’s fine by me.

Instead of listing the numerous reasons people dislike her, instead, I don’t want her to have any focus in the movie for purely aesthetic reasons. Her dialogue is stilted, the writers don’t know what to do with her, and she simply can’t carry a scene.
Well that’s an interesting opinion I wholeheartedly disagree with, but… yeah, it’s just an opinion. Not fact.

I mean yes, you make some good points in your many, many comments. Starlight has been somewhat controversial. To what degree I don’t think we can accurately judge… the funny thing about character opinions is that in situations where people don’t have strong feelings about them, a new season (such as the current one) with good episodes featuring the character tend to sway people to like them more. But all that aside, there will be people pleased to see her. And for the people who won’t be… well, I suspect the more sensible among them will still see the movie anyway, because it is a somewhat ridiculous overreaction to skip a movie due to the appearance of one disliked character.

Hey, I for one only stayed watching it because of Starlight. Season 6 was an endless wilderness of meh, broken up only by her (along with occasional dragons and boutique openings).

Thank god season 7 actually made the others interesting again, though Starlight still got the second best episode of the season so far.

@cloudkicker108
Your forgetting a few things.

One, we can’t see into the future. The trailer merely shows her cheering on Trixie, but we don’t know for sure if that’s the extent of her involvement in the movie. Its an okay assumption that she’ll only be there for a cameo appearance, but its ONLY an assumption. The writers have never treated her as such, and worse, EG Special #3 has many in the fandom even more worried. The writers are addicted to putting her too much in the foreground even where it doesn’t fit, to the point where things like EG Special #3 are made.

Straight Talk: Your entire first paragraph and part of your second paragraph is devoted to the assumption that most who see this trailer will assume she’s going to be put in the background for the entirety of the movie. That’s irrational, a trailer does not reveal the full movie. People are going to make a very wide range of assumptions regarding her involvement. She could be as unimportant as a voiceless cameo, or she could be as important as Twilight putting her in charge of holding down the fort in Canterlot while the Mane Group go on their quest, and anywhere inbetween.

There’s nothing to indicate that a majority of the viewers would assume your extreme OR my example, it will just be all over the place.

“those who dislike Starlight are ultimately still the minority”

Two, the way you describe ‘minority’ implies that Starlight haters are just a tiny part of the fandom that few ever acknowledge because of the small scale. Rainbow Dash haters are a minority. People who find Pinkie Pie ONLY as annoying, are a minority. Starlight’s mixed reception that is CONSTANTLY talked about in Season 6 and Season 7 would take some serious mental gymnastics or denial to call Starlight haters merely ‘a minority and ultimately nothing more’. However, before you jump down my throat about that, I want to clarify something…
CronoM

“You are probably overthinking this if you really believe that her literally second-long appearance here is going to have serious detrimental effects”

Three, when did I say this? I never said that it would have serious detrimental effects.

What I said was that it would simply be advantageous on a marketing and business standpoint. One thing I do agree with you is that the people effected directly by Starlight’s appearance enough not to see the movie will still be a low percentage. But that’s not the biggest problem.

(“it is merely a small gesture to those who watch the show and to help make the world of Equestria feel whole”

There are dozens upon dozens of other characters more associated with Equestria’s background for feeling whole and fall under the “pleasant surprise to see again” category, then a foreground character that the fandom has mixed feelings towards. I will be bold enough to call that observation a fact.)

The masses want to be hyped for a movie. The more hype, the more people who will flock to see it, and there’s no benefit in adding anything to take away from that hype. Advertising a controversial character that, despite your claims otherwise, IS a character with a mixed enough reception, doesn’t benefit the hype of the movie at all. Like I explained before, her presentation didn’t show anything to hype up Starlight fans beyond that she will be in there, but on the other hand, her presence in the full length movie is now ambiguous. We only know the trailer, not the whole movie.

At the very least, it brings no advantage at all. At the very most, it could be a small hype dampener that no movie wants even in a small amount. DHX is perfectly aware of the status of the fandom, they know exactly how much of a mixed reception Starlight has. But knowing and caring are two different things.

And finally, Four…

“If DHX/Hasbro were truly worried that things like would have a significant impact, then they obviously wouldn’t have put her in the trailer to begin with.”

DHX/Hasbro have made a ton of questionable decisions in the past, quite a few significant ones in S6 and S7 time period, including EG Special #3. While we would WISH consistent competency on DHX/Hasbro on every aspect, but that simply isn’t the case.

In short, your arguments have a ton of assumptions being used as foregone conclusions. If you want to continue the discussion at length, I suggest we go to the conversation section. However if you feel we’re simply not going to see eye to eye, I’ll just respect your viewpoint and end it at that. Agree to disagree?

there was no advantage of showing Starlight in the preview.

Have to disagree with you there. One of the big reasons why she seemed so jarring to some back in season 6 was the nature of her appearances. Almost all her on-screen appearances had her as the focus of the episode, and cameo appearances were next to none. As a result, it felt as if she existed solely for the story and not a natural part of the world. By giving her harmless cameo and background roles like the one in the movie trailer (which was probably no more than one second), she can be integrated into the ponyverse without having to make her the central focus of more episodes. Not to mention I’m sure the target audience wouldn’t have minded seeing her make a cameo appearance.

She’s not shown doing anything important, so its not going to trigger the idea “Starlight is going to have a big role in the movie” from too many Starlight fans, but on the other side of the fandom divided on Starlight, it has the chance of triggering thoughts like “No, not Starlight” or “They’re putting Starlight in everything to steal screen time”

You do realize that many Starlight fans also want the mane 6 to have the limelight in the movie, right? Starlight might have risen in significance in recent seasons, but the show as a whole has always been about the six of them (and Spike, of course). Everyone is aware of this. Just having her as part of the world instead of treating her only as some sort of plot device is already a welcoming sight. As for those kind of thoughts being triggered, I don’t think that’ll be much of an issue in the long run. Despite how vocal they are, those who dislike Starlight are ultimately still the minority and those who would outright refuse to watch the film simply because she makes an appearance are an even smaller portion of that minority. If DHX/Hasbro were truly worried that things like would have a significant impact, then they obviously wouldn’t have put her in the trailer to begin with.

The bottom line here is that Starlight’s (and Trixie’s) extremely brief cameo is harmless; it is merely a small gesture to those who watch the show and to help make the world of Equestria feel whole. You are probably overthinking this if you really believe that her literally second-long appearance here is going to have serious detrimental effects.
