We're not pretending things like that can never take place. In fact, Rainbow already received her comeuppance for attention hogging back in "Mysterious Mare-Do-Well" (albeit in a very mind-boggling and poorly-written way). As for this episode, she didn't want the attention because it was coming from her parents (who have been enthusiastically cheering her on her whole life for literally everything little thing she's done) and they were stepping way over the line and directly interfering with her work (they shot fireworks at her for crying out loud). She isn't the one who needs to be knocked down a peg here.
