Actually it does because as mentioned above it wasn't a natural change it was a forced magical one, still unexplained still lazily thrown in at the last minute. If they had a natural cycle of this okay fine but they don't it wasn't natural at all and I really hate bringing the comics into this as they are not telling of the show but they have been around for thousands of years and never changed their default appearance except when they were mutilated by Celestia. Ignoring the comics Cadence talks of the changelings like they are a story that's been passed down, so all this time and they never had a change naturally.


 
So I'd say the griffon analogy works well because it's not a natural thing they always looked that way and were changed through magic we see it happen on screen and the blast destroys the top of the hive.
