Actually, he wasn't in FF4, but a boss or two in the series look similar to him.


 
Interestingly, his dialogue is [much different in the Japanese version of SMRPG.](http://legendsoflocalization.com/culex-is-quite-different-in-japanese-super-mario-rpg/) His original dialogue even showed confusion over Mario's 3D appearance. (Considering Culex is more 2D.)
