General Anime Thread

I’m still amazed at how phenomenal Kaguya-sama is. The first episode was so outstanding. I just love it so much.

hey Holo i was thinking of ideas for rebooting Utena and how does this sound after Anthy turns in Akio his fiance confronts her, and instead of being pissed about Anthy helping to poison her she glmps her and tells her how sorry she was she didn’t realize Anthy was in danger and needed help and Anthy is just sitting there Begging Utena to save her only for Utena to decide that Anthy deserves the guilt tripping and glomping

Bunny Girl Senpai is so good

Seen both first eps of cute girls and cute planes anime this season. Kouya no Kotobuki Hikouta appear be better so far or just really good in general despite its odd blend of CGI and normal animation.

 
Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai ep 1. Girls und Planes. Garuplanes, if you will. It was pretty jarring when they cut to the CG main cast. KF and HnK have shown a show can overcome this, but it’s still a significant hurdle.
 
To its credit, the CG looks good enough that it doesn’t look awful interacting with 2D characters and backgrounds. (Why only some characters are CG is a mystery.) Its dialogue is well-written, well-timed, and well-voiced. Its storytelling is done through context instead of narration or expository dialogue. Its sound design is immersive, and the action was pretty exciting.
 
Overall, a really impressive start for a show I had no expectations for. I’m in.
 
 

 
Tsurune ep 12. Yamada was invovled in this ep, so of course it’s good. The show remembers that the inside of Minato’s head is the most interesting place in this show. Seiya pulling Minato from the brink in his moment of weakness was beautiful. The girls haven’t done much all series, and they really came through when it mattered. Everyone looked really dorky with the headbands, but this is a dorky show in general (like everything I watch). Plus, it’s symbolic of everyone’s unity. It looks dumb but it works.
 
These were all small moments and short scenes, but they add up, which is the point of the episode, the show, and the martial art they portray. It helps that the character acting and the way it frames their internal monologue was great, as expected from the staff.
 
Of course, just when I’m feeling good about this show again, the twins just had to show up and ruin everything. They are the absolute worst. But, still, I might have to amend my 2018 rankings to slot this show somewhere, despite its significant flaws.
 
 

 
Hulaing Babies ep 1. It’s important for these short-form shows to have a good OP, and this one is good, with nice visuals a catchy song. The show itself is very bright and colorful, with a loose but fluid style that I enjoy. It’s bright, cheerful, and it’s a five-minute show. So why not.
 
And I have still have two fansubbed shows to watch, since they came out late. I have too many on my seasonal list (falling way behind on manga and off-season stuff) but I fucking love that this season is this deep.

Endro~!: Oh man, now that was a hilarious first episode, Mao is certainly adorable, then again, all of the girls are cute and I do like the entire thing is set from how she even ended up in the adorable form in the first place too. Plus, can I say I adore the style of the animation along with the comedy on top of it? If the show keeps this up, this just might end up as the anime of the season for me.

Also, the food in that CGI anime looks bad. I mean, look at those croissants! They literally look like turds!

Oh yeah the early and middle parts of Berserk are fucking dark. But the story actually had kind of lightened up lately as Guts finally takes the steps to try and reclaim his humanity. And as a result Guts has gotten so much more fascinating as a character.

Pastel Memories - EP 2: And we’re introduced to the villain from the Black Elites, the fight scene wasn’t too special, but it was pretty amusing seeing the fortunes come true just as the Eel predicted them, over all, the episode wasn’t too bad.

KF2 E1: Not exactly what I would have hoped for at the end of season 1, but interesting enough that I definitely want to see where it goes from here.
 
Random thoughts:  
-They’re going all-in with the post-apocalyptic setting this time, neat.  
-If Serval has trouble remembering Kaban, is this far-future from KF1, or a different incarnation of Serval?  
-I really hope that’s setting up a “what happened to Kaban” mystery plot instead of being a lazy way to write her off completely.  
-Why are all the Ceruleans cameras?  
-Caracal and Serval play off each other well.

Kemono Friends S2E1. I was surprised they went for the S1 callbacks. Felt pretty disingenuous, honestly. I don’t expect them to actually do anything with Kaban, nor can I accept that Serval would simply forget her. (Unless this is a different Serval, or something.) Other than that, it was okay. Feels like they’re going for more CGDCT rather than exploring the human nature or anything like that. (But maybe a deeper theme will become more apparent later on.) Looks weird, but that’s expected from this sort of production.

Kemono Friends 2 is intended as a prequel to Kemono Friends. They probably won’t mention Kaban.

Unless they’re pulling a massive bait-and-switch, that’s already not true. From episode 1- “an unusual friend called a human” that Serval traveled with “for a long time:“

Wow, really? Does that mean they lied? While promoting the show, they called it a prequel.

Kemono Friends Season 2: Well, the first episode wasn’t too bad, does bring up questions as to what happen to Serval’s memory along with who Kyruru is, though the callbacks to the first season were pretty nice. Duck wasn’t too bad of a character and both Pangolin and Armadillo look like they’ll be this season’s Fennec and Raccon.

Kemono Friends Season 2: Wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. Not as fantastic as the original Kemono Friends, but decent. It has moments where it matches the charm of the original, but it never felt like an improvement. Wasn’t bad, wasn’t amazing. It was just good.
 
Going in, I thought it was going to be a trainwreck. However, it wasn’t. I still wished they had continued where season 1 left off and we saw more Kaban, though.
