I does feel like they're showcasing more on these other characters, is that they don't want to repeat the same lessons with the mane 6. It did kind of reared it's ugly head in 28 Pranks later in which there were regressions. While i do think that characters like Applejack and Fluttershy have a lot left in the tank when it comes to story, i think having secondary characters, with having the Mane 6 as a supporting role for them is good for both sides.


 
I honestly think we're seeing these characters like Starlight, Trixie, Maud, Flurry Heart, and possibly others in the future, is that they're setting up either something big for the finale, or creating a new story for the "New Generation of ponies" or a new "Legacy" type story.
