I'm not saying it should be removed indefinitely. I'm saying it should be disabled temporarily until the kinks are worked out, because it is dangerously unfinished.
 
I do think the feature is useful, but only if the scope of the feature is narrowed to being a cosmetic change and nothing more. The fix for the problems is simple enough (forwarding links from the old username, by way of dummy profiles) that it shouldn't have to be disabled for long, if at all.
