From what I gather it was less of a retcon and more of a caveat- Axel only began to “exist” again because Sora/Roxas treated him like he was, in fact, a real person, and that caused him to develop his own Heart as Axel even though he never got his old heart back to become Lea again.

I just played against the saltiest Sol in Smite, funny as hell.

It’s done off-screen but it seems it’s fact that Sora did defeat the heartless that came from Lea, so…  
When someones nobody and heartless are gone they can be restored.  
The one in Dream Drop Distance is Lea.

Wasn’t someone supposed to split into 3 entities when they died? And the Unversed aren’t one of them?

The unversed are one of a kind thing, they came from Master Xehanort splitting Ventus’s heart in two, and come straight from Vanitas.  
Once Vanitas was defeated then the unversed where no more.  
And Ventus technically didn’t have a nobody or a heartless.

Pretty sure KH 1 had a file or something that a person’s heart, body, and mind/soul splits when they die. Did they just drop that 3rd one?

Might as well go Sword and Board this time in Skyrim.

When a heartless is made it’s from the heart leaving the body, when this happens usually the body and mind/soul will wither to nothingness.  
But if someone’s will is strong enough then the mind/soul will then take controle of the body resulting in a nobody.  
A heartless is created from the heart, a nobody from what remains, so only the two.

something weird i found out about skyrim: there are no romanceable wood elves (aka the non-assholeish elves) i find a bit strange but it was probably an accident.

There’s only one romanceable Argonian.  
ONE.
 
And she’s in an area that is a spawn point for a dragon. And because she isn’t a story important NPC she can die.

There was however one case of a mind/soul on it’s own we have seen in KH, the Lingering Will, but giving what had happened to Terra, this may be another case like Ventus/Vanitas and the unversed, somthing one of a kind.
