The Mega Man thread!

One could argue that the concept used in 5-8 was either a prototype of or borrowed straight from the X concept.

7, 8 and Bass impliment the introductory and midpoint stages that’re a staple of the X series

The X series essentially traded the slide for the dash and the E-tanks for Sub tanks

In the X series, The Rush armor essentially got divided up and hidden within the stages like the magnet beam in Megaman’s first game

The X series at least had a charge shot from the start

In general, comparing the “classic” concept with the X concept is like comparing night with day

…but yeah, I’m not a fan of Megaman 9 and 10 either…

Yeah I’ve seen that when MM2 isn’t the game that gets the most love, its MMX1. Its too bad that I’m not quite into the X series compared to the Classic series.

@SeraphimDawn
I. FREAKING. KNOW. But they’ll always keep Rush, Proto Man and other certain stuff.
Now I agree that Mega Man 2 is a good game and is definitely recommended for newcomers but I just feel that the other games (the NES and the non 8-bit games) could need more love because they’re just as good as MM2. In fact, the cancelled Mega Man Universe was gonna be primarily based on Mega Man 2 and even if the game did see the light of day, it will just reek of MM2 ass-kissing. I respect Kenji Inafune’s thoughts on the later Mega Man features after 2’s but goddammit, sliding, charging, heck even Rush Adaptors should always be an option for players.

You know, I actually didn’t like Mega Man 5 when I played it the first time. But that’s because I had a headache at the time and it put me in a bad mood. When playing it again, I eventually grew to like and appreciate Mega Man 5. The weapons in the game aren’t my top favorites but it does have some cool stage designs and music. I really love the Complete Works version of Wave Man’s theme for some reason. Its just a very relaxing track.

The second NES trilogy of Mega Man are very underrated. I remember before I got into the series, I had Mega Man 4 in the collection of NES games I was given when I was a toddler. So MM4 holds a special place in my heart. Dr. Cossack FTW.

@archestereo
Well, Mega Man 6 and Mega Man X were both made during the same time so there were definitely some similarities.

I do like Mega Man 9 & 10 though.

I had Mega Man and Bass on the GBA at one time. Honestly, it felt like a watered down Mega Man 8. I freaking love Cold Man’s theme!

Speaking of the Gameboy. The Gameboy Mega Man games are often overlooked. Remember those Planet robots?

@Red-Supernova

From what I have observed, it’s MM3 that gets the most love after MM2, and then MMX comes in at a distant 3rd.

@SeraphimDawn

…that’s because it basicly is a watered down Mega Man 8; resources from a Playstation game were repurposed for a SNES game (that then got ported to the GBA years later), and even a couple of the robot masters are the same. Really the biggest difference was the option to play as Bass (although I liked playing as Bass better than playing as Megaman).

…but if we’re really gonna go there, one should point out that the Gameboy games (and the two Xtreme games for the GBC, for that matter) were even worse offenders (save for the entirely original fifth installment).

My experience with Mega Man and Bass was a really bad one. The stages and enemy placement were ranked up to asshole levels of annoyance and the lack of E-Tanks to get you through was UNACCEPTABLE. I played this game on an emulator and I think I gave up twice before finishing the entire game for the first time. I save stated so much during that game because if the game’s gonna be unfair, then my only option is to play dirty.
I’ve had such a stressful time playing that I couldn’t even find any music that I liked, and the music is something I always look forward to in a Mega Man game. :( I do like the King’s Stage theme and the Fortress boss theme (both the GBA versions.) though.

Those games are quite overlooked as well. Mega Man V for GB was the only one of the bunch that introduced something new since the other games were compilations of the old Robot Masters. I’ve played the first GB game on my 3DS and the second and third ones on my emulator. (This was before the rest of the GB games were put on the 3DS.) I’ve yet to play the rest of them, especially the fifth game since it was completely unique compared to the others.

@archestereo
Really? I thought it was the other way around.

I thought the GB games were decent, even though I need to play the last two.

plus I never could figure out how to get him to do that

Once you activate the move you have a brief window to press the right button combination leading to the boss you want. Basically you need to press the buttons in sequence so they’ll form a path to the boss you want to transform in. Here’s an example.

Also: Megaman Legends FTW.

I just saw ProJared’s review of Mega Man X7. And it just looks fucking bad. I mean, the graphics look more like they belong in the PS1 (though to be fair, it was probably released early in the PS2’s life cycle), the game looks slow as fuck and it just looks so boring. And then I wonder, considering fans LOVE Mega Man Legends, what did Legends do right that X7 did badly?

The only MM games I’ve effectively finished besides the Legend games are X6 and X: Command Mission so I can’t comment on that but I can tell you that the Legend games were fun. A good mix of silly and serious combined with good gameplay and great music.

The game had a lot of potential to warrant remakes of the other Classic series games. But it didn’t sell well because it was a goddamn PSP game. Seriously, wouldn’t it have sold better if it was a DS game instead?

@Virgil Stormblade
I just watched that review as well. Sweet Celestia, did that game look boring and lazy.

@SeraphimDawn

…technically, it’s still Wily’s castle; ever since MM3 Wily dresses up in a different set of sheep’s clothing every game.

…that and other recycled elements (like reskinned weapons and stages) is probably what led to the stigma that the series was just the same game over and over again, even though the later games were effectively prototypes of X; strange how 9 and 10 didn’t get called out…

@Background Pony #6DBD
Really? You do know that the N64 also got the first Legends game, right?

@SeraphimDawn
How about the Cossack Stage themes?

@archestereo
It must have been hard for Wily to build castles that didn’t have skull motifs.

Even if they were just the same game over and over, why do I feel that they need more love than MM2?
9 and 10 didn’t called out because they were under the whole “MM2 is best pony” restriction.
