The hatedom comes from fans of the original. People who liked those characters enough that seeing them turn into a bunch of assholes in its successor is offensive to them.

Keijo, an anime (and manga) about bathing suit-clad girls trying to knock each other off a floating platform with their boobs/butts. I see it as a parody of sports/combat anime since it uses all those tropes: training arcs, old(er) masters, ridiculous moves, the ‘dangerous forbidden technique’, etc.

I’d argue as the show was winding down, the other kids got pretty damn horrible, and eddy ramped it up almost in retaliation.
 
TTG is mean spirited more in general, yes, but I’d say it has the added ‘advantage’ of it being directed towards its audience as much as it’s cast.

notably, both have movies. EEE serves as a finale of sorts and explains eddy’s general dickery. In contrast, while TTGTM is good, it really highlights the REAL problem, and that is it’s fast as hell production, literally 1 episode a week or something insane like that.
