hasbro never “stayed” with a design. they’ve been going generation through generation since the 90’s.

I wouldn’t say “total unknowns”. Boulder media has been in the business for a long time and worked on many animated shows. They’ve just never done a movie before.
 
And if the animation industry only ever hired people who have done movies before, how do you expect new talent to be discovered?

i dunno about you guys but i on one hand didn’t want g4 2.0, so i’m okay with this.

Because that’s not a sequel/spin-off, despite taking place in the same universe.

Because Hasbro brought Boulder Media in 2016/2017 and decided that all of their projects should be done there. They kinda have experience with 3D because of The Amazing World Of Gumball (one video in their YouTube profile suggests that they may have animated some scenes featuring the Robinsons) and Go Jetters, so it didn’t end up as bad some would have thought.

Maybe wonky, but for me the first two seasons are absolutely the best.

It looks so bad why not stay with G4 design.

you’ve gotta be kidding me! there’s so much more you can do with 3d animation without the limitations of toys and plastic. floating things, thin things, sparse things, shiny metallic things… they’re not doing any of that? she doesn’t even have eyelashes!  

why is it the studio’s first theatrical movie? who planned this? they’re hiring total unknowns?? it looks like filly funtasia! which is fine, actually. but still, I can’t see how things could possibly get any

Yes, I have to say that season 1 of FiM is kinda wonky comparing to following seasons.

Oh absolutely. Honestly it’s fun to look back at a show (ones that have a particularly long run especially) to see what’s changed. The animation, the voices, the characters themselves. It’s funny how much can change in one show’s run.

in fairness the first season of any show is clearly trying to nail its flow down in terms of its artstyle, it just all depends on how much it shows in retrospect

Oh fuck the horn thing. God I’m glad at some point they looked at the horns when they weren’t completely covered at the base and went “okay that doesn’t look right, how about we tweak it a little?” And didn’t just make a paper cone on their head and actually look attached.

They probably’ll use Toonboom. Boulder doesn’t use Flash! The animation may be like the Rainbow Roadtrip special.

Honestly, it showed what the program in the right hands absolutely can do. Even the early season where at times it really showed it was made in flash at times— there were a lot of impressive things they were able to pull off with it

I’m looking forward to it, but I’m still not sure about the choice to set it in G4 Equestria. We’ll have to see how they handle things, but so far it feels like this story would be better suited for a whole new world built from scratch. I feel like there’d be more creative freedom if they didn’t have to fit it into a pre-existing world with its own history.

Toon Boom is pretty much the default these days AFAIK, and it worked for the 2017 movie and Rainbow Roadtrip so odds are they’ll put it to further use here
 

 
G4 was an absolute surprise that made them ungodly amounts of cultural and product revenue/residuals, I’m pretty sure they won’t skimp on G5

I’m curious to see where it goes too if they do make a 2d animated series. Since flash is finally dead, I can imagine that they would use ToonBoom right? The closest thing I can imagine with this style is perhaps this.  

 
Ofc, there’s going to be a lot of different animators and storyboard artists/revisionists. And we don’t know how much budget Hasbro would put towards the series.

Another reason I’m not very positive about G5 is because its premise does not lend itself to a good series. FiM started so wonderfully, presenting an alien world with its own rules and so much mystery. It created a canvas to easily work on and expand its potential. The possibilities were endless, and if it were not for it we would’ve never gotten 9 seasons.
 
This movie - what the hell is going to happen? Obviously the ponies will reunite at the end of the movie after the big bad is gone, what then happens in the series? Will they just continue with this one idea of solving disputes between characters? I don’t see any room for ideas here. I’m afraid whatever the show will be about will be forced and toytastic.
 
If you ask me the idea of starting a series off with a movie is terrible.
