yeah that’s probably it. if I imagine the teeth/tongue at a shallower angle it works pretty good.

I see what you mean, I think the mistake was drawing in the teeth/tongue along the same angle as the lips since I imagined more of an O than an ah. Probably some perspective shenanigans that got messed up too.

when the mouth opens, the lower jaw bone tilts down, making a V shape with the upper jaw, though the pivot point is behind the intersection of that V, slightly overlapping sorta like scissors.

then the skin of the cheeks stretches over the back part of that V, turning it into a C shape, with the back of the C most stretched for really big yawns.

this picture kind of looks like the lower jaw just flipped open, pivoting at the edge of the cheeks.
