Right, but they made the claim that it was somehow the more ‘correct’ usage, which is false. If people want to use it as slang, then go for it, but the original and much more common meaning is to describe two individuals as inseparable.

I’m not familiar with Ren and Stimpy, but I’ll go with what you’re suggesting.
Ren and Stimpy being a couple is not canon. Lyrabon is not canon. But, as you said, someone could interpret/headcanon them as a couple if they wanted too. Other people will continue to interpret them as friends. Again, this kind of interaction only indicates the characters being close, which could mean friends or lovers.

Okay, I agree that there’s an enormous amount of subtext, but I’m pretty sure that “joined at the hip” refers to conjoined twin and people who are just together a lot, not “constantly having sex”.

I think it’s more funny this way. Of course, like any joking, it invariably will get stale after a certain point, but what that point is, that depends on the individual.
 
Plus, the show doesn’t pay much attention to romance save for some occasions here and there, so, even if Lyra and Bon Bon do outright become a couple, it most likely wouldn’t spend much time in the spotlight anyway. Unless Hasbro wants an ‘It’s okay to be gay’ episode be made.
