obviously they were cleaned of blood as they slid through the box out the other side.

Everybody who sees this trick expects the assistant to be safe, so there’s no real suspense. This way it gives them a moment to go “…wait, did something actually go wrong? Is she really hurt?” and the suspense is back. Brilliant!
 
You can’t drag it out too much though, or they’ll notice the lack of blood on the blades.
