I’ve never understood the hate that game gets, then again. Never played it, but it has to have some kind of redeeming value if millions of people enjoy it.
Good FPS games are hard to come by, or so from what I’ve heard. They’re not exactly in my favorite genre; TF2 is pretty much the only one I’ll play. I think the fun in it is the fact that it’s not realistic. The moronic hats, the teleporters, the silly looking explosions and the fact that the game just loves to point out where your body parts landed when you go through an explosion…I think that’s the replay value. I’m not really familiar with many other FPS games, so maybe that’s the problem; people get tired of realism.
The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games.-the CEO of Activision
It’s Semi Realistic FPS games really.
I remember being annoyed when playing Medal of Honor (the first one) and CS in a nearby internet cafee years ago.
We almost had brawls there.
I assume playing CoD with a headseat and listening to all those kids might cause spontaneous enragement as well.
Xyres, I used to think that CoD’s simplicity was one of the reasons too, but it’s similar in other FPS’s too. If I had a nickle for everytime i’ve heard some TR kidde on PS2 scream incoherent expletives I could afford a new gun…
There are other factors at play when it comes to CoD’s community problems.
It is, of course, a matter of personal opinion in all of this so bear that in mind as I explain my own personal reasoning.
The COD games are so despised because the represent something in gaming that has become huge, cumbersome, and set incredible precedence; the AAA gaming title that is, at it’s core, all polish and no heart.
They are games that are incredibly limited, linear, and represent some of the worst things in gaming. They’re released, like clockwork, on a regular schedule and produce a huge amount of flash and buzz while providing nothing of substance. What’s that quote of shakespeare?
It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.
In truth the COD games are incredibly twitchy, polished, and immensely playable. However, they are also banal, boring, and heartless. It’s like the poppiest of pop music.

Because CoD is more over-hyped and mainstream. You don’t see children irl talking about how they “pwned” at TF2.
That and it literally takes no skill to play a game like CoD. It’s as simple as pick a gun and win.
Look, I’ve never played the game, but really, can CoD be that bad? Yes, I know, omgfiveyroldbrats and omgrepeatedstoryline. But is that really it? I mean, there are five year old brats everywhere on every “live action” game (TF2, XBox Live, Left 4 Dead), what makes CoD so special?
I dislike CoD because of its simplicity, but that’s more of a subjective thing. Some people like just being able to pick up a gun and shoot shit, if thats fun for them so be it.
