3D wasn’t used because “lol let’s just throw another animation method in,” it was used because “we literally cannot make the character look the way we want given only the tools Flash provides.”
Despite her improving a bit since MDW, I was really nervous about Wonderbolts Academy, and my fears were put to rest. Merriweather is probably not my favorite writer for the show, but I’ll never throw a tantrum about who wrote an episode. The episode itself was kinda good, anyway.
As for the CGI, there are some steps that can be taken to make it look more believable (one being rendering it out in a higher frame rate, not the Zoids-ass low frame rate it had); and I don’t know the reasons behind using 3D, but if it was for the most obvious reason (them being very animated meaning it would be hell on the animators), then I can forgive it. It’s all about how believable they are, and the main things keeping it from being believable were low framerate, and slight over-animation in some parts. Futurama uses 3D a lot, and it pulls it off well for a primarily 2D show, so it can be done right, and given more experience, will be done right.
Dude, don’t challenge them to make serious hate art. I’ve seen some hate art in my day, and this? This is mockery, bitter mockery, but still just mockery. We haven’t even begun to descend to the depths of true hatred
When your “hate” for a writer of a children’s cartoon becomes so serious that you will spend time unironically drawing hate art, I have genuine concern for your mental state.
I mean I dislike some of her episodes too but Jesus…
And by “bumps”, you mean giant, lava spewing, obviously evil columns that are attempting to drag the moon into Equestria yet somehow no one had any initiative to investigate?
It was slapstick fun but it was kind of ruined by how it was basically Dash’s friends acting like dicks instead of sitting her down. It was the worst episode of the show by far and kind of an ugly entrance for the writer.
She has gotten way better, though. But she still has some bumps.
I don’t really care to get into the whole writer bashing thing, I’ve kept myself pretty ignorant of it. Though with all the hubbub about Merriwether I wiki’d the writers and their episodes, and yeah, she’s got some stinkers. :X
On the otherhand I hope Meghan McCarthy writes an Applejack episode one day.
I really enjoyed the CGI. I felt like having them look “off” helped make them more menacing. Remember how Courage the Cowardly Dog used different art styles to show off how creepy something was? This is the much scaled back version.
That said, leave it as a one time thing. Don’t make a habit of it.
The timber wolf with glasses looks cool, no denying that.
Spike dressing up as the Mare-Do-Well… If she does make a reappearance, and I hope she does, she’ll need to have new tricks up her sleeve to keep things fresh.
