@Badumsquish
I’m not trying to change minds. Trying to talk someone out of what they find visually appealing in animation is like trying to talk them out of what appeals to them sexually. Sometimes they’re the same thing, but this “CalArts style” conspiracy is bullcrap. Yes, I realize my efforts are ultimately futile, but I’ll be dipped in shit and rolled in bread crumbs before sitting back and waiting for the end. And if I can make just one person realize the truth then it will all have been worth it.

As for Thundercats Roar, honestly, I really couldn’t care less. For one, I’m not six years old, and for two I’m old enough to remember the original Thundercats. I can tell you right now, even if Thundercats ROAR does the “self aware, constantly makes fun of itself for how stupid it is” thing that Teen Titans GO! does, there’s nothing it can do that will ever be funnier than the original “C.A.T.S. goes to Muscle Beach” horror show taking itself almost seriously. Even by the standards back then, Thundercats was pretty damn dumb.

Maybe, but you’re going to drive yourself insane trying to tell the internet to stop using a word because it’s technically wrong. It’s like telling people to call Derpy “Muffins” instead; it’s a losing battle with no prize. Besides, as far as I’m concerned it’s as good a name as any and I do feel that style is easily distinct enough to deserve some kind of label. Part of what makes me prefer the name “Calarts Style” to other names though is it’s not an inherently negative name; I don’t think that style is inherently bad, just very overused as of late and very ill-fitting of many of the shows it’s been used for :D

@Nupie The Hero
Really my only major complaints with that style is it’s very ill-fitting for action shows or more serious ones, and how samey it is. It really suits Gumball’s style of humor, and it really suits Gravity Falls’ mind-screwyness and how it (like Kirby) hides really messed up stuff beneath an innocent veneer. It’s at it’s absolute worst when a show is remade in that style (which was the whole point of this image of mine in the first place) :D

@redweasel
And none of that has anything to do with CalArts and everything to do with animation trends and what kids today find aesthetically appealing. As I said before, whether people like it or not, it’s clear that this current aesthetic is in while 80’s aspirational human physicality is out. I’m not denying that the trend exists, I’m denying the bullshit conspiracies about animation monopolies and the general “hurrg, SJW cartoon” garbage.

Even the “sausage mouth” and “same face” arguments are crap, because anyone who pays even a modicum of attention to the shows “CalArts style” gets regularly hurled at are all wildly different in styles, motion, and animation. Anybody who seriously claims that Steven Universe, The Amazing World of Gumball, Star vs the Forces of Evil, We Bare Bears, and Gravity Falls all have the same styles and animation are either lying, not paying attention, or stupid.

if I say “I hate when people blame car companies for bad driving” that is an opinion. if I say “I hate when people blame car companies for bad driving because bad driving isn’t real,” that is insane. I’m not claiming the california institute of the arts teaches sausage mouths, but it’s pretty obvious that sausage mouths exist. claiming otherwise undermines your own argument, that whether or not the style is real, we shouldn’t blame the california institute of the arts for it.

@redweasel
No, “CalArts style” isn’t real and the California Institute of the Arts doesn’t teach that style at all. That and almost everyone that dis gets hurled at never went to CalArts in the first place. If it’s not your thing, fine, you do you, but don’t parrot stupid buzzwords that peddle even more stupid conspiracies about animation monopolies or hiring bias.

If you’re going to call it anything, call it “plush style,” since they look like plush dolls ready to be sold on toy store shelves or in Build a Bear.

you are saying that calarts style is real, but it’s unfair to call it “calarts” because that makes fun of the “California Institute of the Arts.” you want us to call it “formal non-abstract angularity,” so that justice is served.

I’m just gonna call it sausage mouths.

Almost all of those shows are fronted by people who never set foot in CalArts in the first place.

This has nothing to do with where they learned to animate and everything to do with trends in what kids today find visually appealing. Formal abstract non angularity is in, aspirational human physicality is out. Pure and simple.

@Nupie The Hero
That ‘style’ doesn’t exist. Most of the shows and creators that dis gets hurled at never set foot in CalArts in the first place, and the guy who coined the phrase has the credentials of creating Ren and Stimpy and barely eking out two seasons before he was shitcanned for not being able to make a deadline to save his life and was an overall pain in the ass to work with. Then he coasted on that for two decades while using his fame to groom and gaslight young girls. Gee, what a guy.

The whole thing is just a stupid buzzword to imply animation monopolies and that people get hired because of a bias toward what school they went to vs actual talent, which in and of itself is stupid because the people who actually did go to CalArts have created some of the best modern cartoons in recent history. “CalArts style” is right up there with “chemtrails” and “the Earth is flat” on the scale of “If you believe this, you are stupid.”

it’s a art style that is associated with the California Institute of the Arts, the picture we are commenting on is in the style of one of shows that uses the calarts style

I agree. it’s true puppet animation makes things easy and simple that where once hard and complicated. some animators will leave it at that, save time and effort, and have an easier time at their job.

but others wil go do even harder and more incredible things, since what used to be hard has been taken care of for them.

also you’re right that kids will like whatever they see. that’s what impressionable means. it’s easy to make kids like something, so we can’t say things have to only be what kids like, since if they were not what kids like, then kids would like it anyway!
