@Ardail
I believe I made the mistake of referring to the fandom as “hangers on”. Anyway, to actually explain: Glim was a throwaway character not intended for much if any re-use. My evidence for this is that she’s design-wise too similar to Twilight Sparkle, she was obviously intended to be a twisted reflection of Twilight and not a develop-able character. After all, why make two of them almost the same color if you have to do injection molded toys later?
But, MLP did a no-no and made fun of communism with Glim’s 2 parter, so a no doubt forced staff change or two later and the throwaway character is not only coming back next season to be a full-time Mary Sue but her first standalone-story episode is her serially abusing every other character. It’s insulting by design and more importantly, children would be oblivious to it. This is part of a continuing series of changes to MLP properties entirely designed to wedge bronies away from what they believe to be an intellectual property that’s bigger than us and that will “survive” us. Everything from Twilicorn to Flash Sentry to Poochie here was designed to irritate and ultimately get rid of adult viewers and their icky, google-search ruining pornography. Hasbro will make more money if it gets rid of us and it knows that, it’s nothing personal.
Easy, boys. It’s the nature of controversial characters to divide the people. Tavi959 has some good points, but I can understand, why some persons still don’t like MiniTwilight (I love this nickname, go Trix! ^^). They have their issues with her, because it’s a quite personal question, if you believe, that she got away very easily for her crimes, or not.
For myself, a person who actually loves reformed villians and their path to “redemption”, she’s fine and deserves their screentime. For those, who thinks she didn’t suffered enough, well, it’s just a pain in the a**. But those people are mostly the ones who never ever suffered for their one sins and don’t know anything about how hard is it to actually forgive yourself. Are these people flawless? Of course not. But they think about their own moral highground so much, they can’t see or accept their own wrong behaviour. shoulder shrug
So don’t get angry, to-fat-to-fly. It’s just not worth the time. ;-)
Ah, and by the way, some of you just miss the point, how hilarous this meme is about the “the soviet union is back”. Maybe it’s because I’m German and find it quite amusing (Rise of the Berlin Wall, D’oh!) and yes, I support our little Chairpony of the Presidium Starlight Glimmer in her conquest of Equestria. All Glory to the Equality! :-D
The thing some people don’t seem to understand is that MLP wasn’t a revolution. It wasn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread. People talk nostalgic about season 1 as if it was clever, yet I find it debatable if I could consider any of those episodes my favorite. Season 1 was quaint and cute, but there was nothing earth shattering about it. And there’s been nothing but drama ever since Faust left the show. That was 7 years ago and people still won’t shut up about it.
The people who stoop to calling Starlight “Poochie” are hoping their cries will get her removed from the show. That’s clearly not going to happen, and by trying to relate her to Poochie they fail at understanding who Poochie was.
Itchy and Scratchy has never aspired to be anything more than a cartoon about a mouse and a cat trying to kill each other. Poochie’s introduction changed that entirely, shifting the focus of the show almost entirely to him and his awful personality getting in the way of Itchy and Scratchy killing each other. This was why he was hated, and subsequently removed, in-universe. He completely ruined the whole reason anyone watched the show.
The reason Starlight is NOT Poochie is that, despite the claims of her detractors, she is none of those things. The show isn’t all about her, her personality really isn’t any worse than Rainbow Dash’s ever was and her mere presence hasn’t negated the reason for watching the show. Unless your reason for watching the show is because you really wanted Trixie or Sunset Shimmer to be the student instead.
Neither of those would ever have happened. Sunset is never leaving EG thanks to everyone whining about Flash Sentry’s cameos and Trixie enjoys getting on Twilight’s nerves too much to have ever studied under her. What makes either of them deserving while Starlight is not, anyway? Sunset was greedy for power and Trixie enslaved Ponyville as an act of revenge. Why is this okay, but Starlight is not?
Because she’s charismatic, a powerful mage AND pretty clever? Traits normally associated with a Mary Sue? But she’s not one of those, either, because she’s flawed by her crippled social skills. “Unjustified!” You say. Except it’s not a stretch at all for an introvert to resent the thing that took their only friend away.
If you ask me, the real reason a lot of people hate Starlight is because she’s a little too real compared to the Mane 6, who are idealistic but relatable.
There was an episode of the simpsons where Homer was cast as the voice of a new dog character for the Itchy and Scratchy series. The dog was named Poochie. he didn’t last long though. It was just for that one episode.
It’s a great animation, but I really want to believe no one seriously believes that Glimmer = Poochie because that would be retarded even if she wasn’t the best thing to happen to the show in eons.
