No, the portal isn’t always open, it just seems to have some kind of distortion when you touch it even if it’s close now.

It’s not the extra time needed that would damage Twilight’s story, but the removal of full focus from her at this moment. If it had to be in there, this section would do much better as a completely separate song instead of as a duet with Twilight’s existing song.

The other deleted scenes specifically point out that she can visit whenever she wants, and she even says she’s going to. And she doesn’t have to have Twilight open the portal, Friendship Games established it’s just always open. Which seems like a bad idea for other reasons, but, whatever. It’s established now.

The song was about more than just missing Equestria. It was about Sunset’s yearning for a greater purpose. And it would not take so much time to show that it would somehow damage human Twilight’s characterization.

Regardless of who is more important to the story as a whole, Human Twilight’s starting situation, fall, and redemption was the focus of this movie in particular; changing that song to a duet wouldn’t change that, but it would hurt the depiction of Twilight’s journey by taking focus off of her.

It would also call into question why Sunset doesn’t just go visit the pony world if she misses it. Twilight is a princess, and I’m sure she can pardon the theft of one of her possessions, even if it was an element of harmony (especially since she probably hasn’t disclosed anything else Sunset did except to Celestia). She could write to Twilight and ask her to open the portal for a visit at almost any time.

Not at all. The duet served to highlight some of their similarities and differences. And besides, who said this movie should revolve around human Twilight? Sunset’s development is far more important to the story, so hers should get more focus.

Human Twi really needed a full song to flesh out her desires as the film’s primary newcomer, though. Sharing a song with Sunset would have diminished her development.

I’m just going to iterate a general sentiment here. When I saw the deleted half of the song, I thought, I knew it! Sunset still feels the tug of the enormous potential she had as a unicorn prodigy and personal student of Celestia. This sense of destiny unfulfilled can and should lead her back to Equestria, to reconciliation with her old teacher and a well-deserved position of leadership. All of that was conveyed with one simple duet, and they took it out. No amount of rationalizing is going to make me think that was a good call.

See, I have the opposite problem. As ambitious and persistent as she once was, I have a harder time believing that Sunset would just give up on an interesting magical problem because it’s hard than that she would get bored of petty hyoo-man drama and decide to pursue her passions elsewhere.

@DAPLR
Now that’s an interesting idea. The issue with Homesick Shimmer is that it’s not enough to sustain a dramatic arc. There’s no tension there. As was pointed out earlier and as the deleted scenes confirm, it literally doesn’t matter which world Sunset calls home since she can simply commute to the other. (Well, most of the time.) But if you combine that with the more general question of what she should do with her life now, regardless of where she lives, you might be able to get something going.

Yeah, you said “I think that we can all agree that homesick Shimmer is a great idea”, and I don’t agree with that. I think it’s a terrible idea.
And as for “after high school”, who knows? Depending on how the next movie takes the magic of that world, it’s possible she could spend her life on researching it.

@TheOtakuX
What’s a terrible idea? That she is homesick? Well, she did have a life in Equestria, though a solitary one, it was still hers. What about her parents? Her dreams? The places she wanted to go and see? There is so much to do with Sunset Shimmer. I mean, all the Mane 6 have a goal. What’s Sunset Shimmer’s? To stay in human world? But after high school, what then? I would love to know what the once ambitious Sunset wants out of life now, or perhaps her struggle with her change in life. How although she has friends and is happy, she has no goals anymore, no dreams, they died with her old selfish self. What does want to do? She is becoming Twilight who can help out with any friendship problem, but isn’t the student of Celestia. Other than her friends, what does she want out of life?

@Ebalosus
I don’t agree with that. I think it’s a terrible idea. Though seeing the other deleted scenes, I like that one gave the more believable explanation of her just being frustrated by the magic in the human world and wanting to go to Equestria because it’s easier.

I think they cut it because they felt that it was a plotline that deserved to be fleshed out far more than what they had. Assuming that the deleted scenes were all the lines Sunset had about being homesick, it would have felt kinda…anticlimactic as she just mentions it twice and then decides to stay. I love Sunset’s character as much as the next guy, so I am actually glad that her biggest question, ‘should I stay here or go home?’, isn’t relegated to a sub par subplot, but will hopefully be the main issue she has to deal with in the next movie.
Though, I imagine that while I would prefer she goes home to Equestria, marketing-wise, that would be a bad decision as she is a huge draw now to see the Equestria Girls movies, so removing her would be unwise. Not to mention, she is the reason for magic being in that world in the first place, and though it is established that the Humane six now have magic of their own, her being the tie to MLP would be odd for her to come back.
HOWEVER. It’s also possible that the subplot was cut because they decided to change the resolution, and the movie was too far gone to change enough for Sunset to want to come home. Why? Well, there is the question of, ’ Where is Human Sunset?’. Perhaps the writers found a way to have their cake, (Sunset staying in human world), and eating it too, (Sunset coming home to Equestria).
^This person gets it. I think that we can all agree that homesick Shimmer is a great idea, and something that should be explored; but that some of us want to put the characterisation horse before the plot and narrative cart.

I’d rather them do this aspect well, rather than just throw it in because muh characterisation!

Copy-paste from what I said regarding the deleted scene from the FG thread:
As for the deleted scene. It was great, don’t get me wrong, and am hoping to see it fully animated a la My Past is not Today; but I can understand why they cut it. So far in the movies, they haven’t really gone into Sunset’s feeling for Equestria to any great detail apart from “she’s from there, and she regrets leaving her studies under Celestia.” Sunset being homesick would be a great subplot, but personally I don’t think it would’ve added much to FG beyond more characterisation for Sunset (feel free to point out how it could, I geniunely what to know how you’d integrate that subplot into the plot of FG), thus is kind of a moot point whether or not it should’ve been included in FG.
Sunset being homesick is something I want to see examined in a future installment, if not a director’s cut of FG, because like with magic in the EQG universe, it’s kind of important, even if Sunset being homesick is only of character importance.
My line of thinking is similar to the likes of Mojo, Background Pony #22A0, and Background Pony #1F2B, in that they would have needed to restructure the movie a bit to accommodate the “Sunset is homesick” subplot. Like I said, I want to see this subplot utilised in someway, but understand why it was cut from the movie.

Aw, man. I can’t believe we didn’t get this version. It gives Sunset some extra development, it creates a nice contrast with “Right There in Front of Me,” and it clarifies FG’s place in the larger Equestria Girls saga.

I mean, look at it in context. Sunset is homesick for the magic and adventure of Equestria. What we learn in this movie is that, for better or worse, those things are now fully available in the human world. Sci-Twi’s arc reactor isn’t a one-off crisis like the Sirens. It shows that the muggles have learned enough to manufacture their own magical threats, which means they’re going to have an ongoing magic problem–a problem Sunset is uniquely qualified to address. And by the end, she’s embraced her new home and her role as its protector. (Cue SUNSET SHIMMER: DEFENDER OF EARTH as the star of EqG IV.)

Actually, I realized something… If Sunset Shimmer had been in this song, it would have (possibly) been for a plot point about Sunset wanting to return to Equestria, which was not implied for the remainder of the movie. I think they originally had that as a thread, but dropped it to keep the movie focused on Human!Twilight. So, it’s really not all that bad.

I disagree, I’d rather have the shorts, giving us more story, than music videos.
Background Pony #D197
what!!! how dare you delete the sunset part! is much much much better
Same shit happened with Trixie’s song in RR, they cut off most of it for no good reason.
What I don’t get is why some unfinished songs (like “Shake your Tail”) and songs that aren’t even in the movie (like “Friendship Through the Ages”) get full music videos but other songs like this one don’t. They should have made full music videos for each of these songs instead of making those pre-movie shorts.

Im gonna guess it was completely accurate…. in a scene that got cut.

but yeah this is fully voiced and the animatic is basically complete so back when they wrote that information it was probably true, this was cut pretty late into the process.

Sunset Shimmer is studious and ashamed of her past, I can imagine her not wanting to go home until she believes she has learned everything there is to learn about friendship.
