The eyes would work perfectly well with a male character, too. Everything about the design would work either way. I haved actually heard the voice, tho since I didn’t watch it so I don’t know about that.

Just look at her in episode 11.
I know that some people were confused in s1e1 and thought that RD was a boy (by understandable reasons)
But Smolder takes the cake: she has really androgen voice, name and appearance; she looks much more buff then Ember (when they in the same scene) and has ‘chill dude’ personality.
No wonder people got confused.

True, her raspy voice made me think that she’s a boy like Spike. Not to mention a male sounding name.
