Ever looked into using Filmic Blender? It takes some getting used to the numeric values for the lights (because of the increased dynamic range, you’ll use more real-world values) but the end result is worth it.

These animation method looks even more adequate for ponies than SFM (and way more than gmod)

Ray-trace rendering can be a bitch sometimes, especially when the scene has a lot of complex geometry and reflective materials. But the results are always good.

Technically there is one light source lighting the front of the model, which is the sun itself. And sun lighting usually requires very sharp shadows, otherwise it doesn’t look like it’s the sun lighting the model even though this is clearly on an out-door stage from The Mane Attraction.

Just an observation: lighting has a tremendous effect on shadows. (“Yes, I know,” you’re saying. But wait, I have a point, maybe.) Is the model here lit from a single point-source?
 
I can remember seeing 1980s CGI with really weird looking, strangely sharp-edged shadows that went on and on and it took me a while to figure out that the shadows looked like that because 1980s 3D CGI tended to render scenes with a single point-source of light (glass looked weird too, with neither surface reflections nor internal refraction, and when they tried to render stuff like bottles and wine glasses they ended up looking like they were made out of translucent smoke-REALLY obvious and off-putting). Diffuse sources and diffuse lighting, of course, are more computationally intensive, but-

I think the amount of shadow created from each lash could be part of it. Eyelashes and strands of hair wouldn’t create shadows as harsh or dark as they are here, they’re being treated as a shadow as strong as any other part of her body. Hope that makes sense.  
Tiny details like that aside, this is fantastic! Hope to see more soon.

I plan to, but I need to finalize Coloratura’s model first before I make other ponies. If I find a serious problem with the model, I’d have to waste time applying a fix to every pony model. Unless there’s something I don’t know about that can make applying those same changes to different models much easier and faster.

I get this type of feedback about the lashes quite often, but I’m not sure what I can do about it. Coloratura’s lashes are straight and pointy by design, which is unlike any other pony’s lashes:

The only problem I have is with the model, since the pointed eyelashes look bad to me.
