Mine is that they’re an entirely separate species from ponies and they just happen to look practically indistinguishable from them. They’re native to Tartarus but are one of the few such species that aren’t inherently evil or dangerous (They can be aggressive, but all they do is lick their “victims” and don’t actually cause harm). For the most part they prefer secrecy and staying hidden, but some risk making their presence known and befriending grubby ponies.

My headcanon for her while I was drawing the picture I posted, is that she actually started out as a normal pony. But because her mother was somehow affected by Dark Magic during pregnancy her child gradually began to change as she got older. What started as an odd habit of chewing on anything she could get her hooves on evolved into the more specific diet of the Akaname, with her body changing to suit that tiny drop of Dark Magic flowing through her veins.
 
Same headcanon for that Rokurokubi pony you made: Not from Tartarus, but infected with a little bit of magic from there while she was still in the womb.

Well she’s a supernatural species. She may be a cutie with the bootie, but she can squeeze through openings no pony her shape and size could ever hope to squeeze through. Except for maybe Pinkie Pie. This creature’s on a whole different level from a regular monster pony. In my continuity Akanames are a native species of Tartarus: They’re just able to escape fairly easily due to their flexibleness and affinity for remaining unseen (though it’s not very common that it happens; for the most part they’re content to stay put), and since their only real interest is feeding and hiding, they’ll either aggressively pin you down to lick you clean, or hide from you altogether if you have good hygene. Fun fact: many public washroom and shower facilities house these things without ponies even realizing it.

In form it’s really no different than regular saliva, save for the key difference that you can’t get sick from it. These things feed on germs and such too, so their mouth is entirely sterile.

Main thing is just to confirm you do end up covered in slime but it’s entirely sterile?
