Ponyville isn’t located on the side of a mountain, silly. That’s the location of Trixie’s ramshackle cottage. ;)
The scene is mirrored but it is indeed Ramiel’s energy beam blasting Mt Futago.
Basically they shot an angel (the monsters of the movie), but weren’t able to kill it. The angel retaliated and ended up melting the mountain they were hiding behind.
Why? Why not!
