That’s OK. I meant Toei, which at the same time also did Fist of the North Star and Saint Seiya, when they actually gave a shit for animation…
I dunno if Toei did this special or not, but they did do the majority of G1 MLP.

Actually, I think I misunderstood, thought the original comment was referring to Rankin-Bass, which did commission ‘serious western looking’ animation from overseas studios around the same time period.
The Japanese animation studio for this special was quite possibly Toei, though I’m too lazy to 100% confirm.
They certainly worked on some inbetween cels for the regular series though.
If it was, interesting…
It’s possibly the same animation studio.
