I think it was more that here was a great inside gag (the g1 pony face) and they decided to use it for promos. AFter the fact, sure, but not before. Its like how movie trailers for comedyies nearly always show the funniest parts and ruin the jokes.

Reminds me of when Sibsy complained about that one S3 commercial spoiling the “Bet’cha can’t make a face crazier then THIS!” gag. (Odd they edited in Rarity & Fluttershy in that moment in the commercial.)

If you haven’t followed, the IDW editor Bobby Curnow even was confused why this was the case as he hadn’t cleared the image to be used as the cover.
 
this sounds like the case of Comics World jumping the gun.
