There is evidence that supports what I think, and one piece of evidence is the “Crystal Caves” below Canterlot. Crystals are often formed, and found, in volcanic tubes.
Not only that, but there was even a mine shaft that Princess Cadance and Twilight used to escape the Crystal Caves!
Thinking about how Canterlot might have been built on a volcano, I started thinking about the mountain named “Smoky Mountain” just outside of Ponyville that the mane six had to climb in the episode “Dragonshy.”
I believe that mountain is actually another volcano. There is also evidence to support this theory as well! What is this evidence of mine (besides the name) you ask? Three words: Sweet Apple Acres.
The Apple Family claims to have the best tasting apples in all of Equestria, and I wouldn’t doubt it! Volcanic soil is very rich in nutrients, and that is why their trees grow so well and the apples taste so good!
If you can recall in the episode “Family Appreciation Day,” we learn that Princess Celestia gives the Apple Family that land to build a farm.
Granny Smith: And as if the beauty of that city wasn’t enough, suddenly, she appeared. Princess Celestia, the most regal of all ponies. When lo and behold, she stopped to look at my pa’s seed collection. Then Princess Celestia saw that we were plumb-tuckered and hankerin’ to find our forever home. And bein’ a royal Princess and all, she knew exactly the place for us to lay down our stakes.
Nah. But I am on Ponylands.
I thought the same thing when this popped in my head.
BTW, are you Lapis-Lazuli and Stitch on fimfiction?
Add Solar Flare (corrupt Celestia) to this scenario, and Equestria is now hell.
Thanks!

There may have been a small ocean/sea in between the south and north plates before the two continental plates met, causing volcanoes to form.
Good point, andesite is a volcanic rock. Equestrian geology is a bit of a mess, it seems.
But AJ got extrusive andesite on her hoof while sledding, meaning that there must be a lava breach somewhere in the mountains.
Yup! I’m a nerd and proud!
Note that your citation says, “If one of the colliding plates is topped with oceanic crust…” That would be the volcano-forming case. But that’s not the case you’ve drawn on your map. That shows two plates topped by continental crusts, like the convergent boundary that forms the (non-volcanic) Himalayas.
$400 is a lot when you’re unemployed. I have a disability income of $1300 a month, and most of that goes into rent and bills. I’ve recently started the process of getting into a well-paying job, but it’s a long process.
Not necessarily. Explore options and prices more and do some research, I’m sure you could find something that works. It may seem hard to afford now, but it’ll be even harder to afford during an emergency.
In less than five minutes, just on my phone, I found a 2 month supply at $407. Given some time and searching I’m sure you could do even better, and keep in mind you don’t need to get it all at once. You can make it kinda like a payment plan getting a little at a time. Don’t forget water purifiers, though.
Also; even if no natural disaster, economic collapse, depression, recession, or even just unemployment are things that could make you glad you got it.
Ehck. How did people keep… “things” clean before toilet paper?…
Uh no. You don’t quite understand how America handles emergencies. We have an entirely reactive approach to them. Also, despite being fairly well off (at least for the lower class), I don’t have the spare money for stocking up for a disaster. Even if I did, I live in an apartment which I’ll be moving out of soon, so I have nowhere to store anything. Preparedness is the luxury of homeowners.
That’s disturbing news. Well, emergency preparedness: do you have months or a year of food storage? Water purifiers? Lots of extra gas for your car, if you live in the Northwest? At the very least, surgical masks would go a long way for ash. See: “Supervolcano.”
Your comment made me do some more research and led me to find this:
I believe that this is what the boundary would look like from a topographical view, but with the plates moving towards each other, not away.
Thanks for reminding us that North America is doomed. Especially with fracking picking up around Ol’ Faithful.
What about the crystal mountains? Old/no longer growing? Or is the northern plate not moving, and being squeezed from both sides?
If Canterlot mountain does erupt, the trains will be the first to know :p

That would really suck!
What about the yellowstone supervolcano? That’s far from any coastline. Though it is a supervolcano as opposed to a regular one…
