Looking for a recommendation for a fanfic.

Snowy
Not a Llama - Happy April Fools Day!

Nobody replied to you, which is kind of sad, so I’ll try to make up for it by dumping a bunch of recommendations:

Anything and everything by GhostOfHeraclitus. Start with Whom The Princesses Would Destroy, and make sure to check out “Any Other Business” in Obiter Dicta after (the rest is also worth reading). The Princess of Books by anowack is also quite good. The Oversaturated world by FanOfMostEverything (starts with Oversaturation, EQG based). Rites of Ascension by CvBrony. There Goes the Neighborhood by Georg. If you like things about Celestia and Luna, Eclipse by 8686; but even if you don’t you won’t go wrong with Of Dragons and Horses, Songs and Solace (tagged Sad but really isn’t, and Lord Ragnarok is best dragon king). Stardust is tagged dark but isn’t that dark (it’s sequel gets rather darker, though) and is one of the best crossovers I’ve read, and I say that having gone in with next to no knowledge of XCOM. The Mare Who Once Lived On The Moon got a little off the rails at the end but if you like steampunk at all you owe it to yourself to read it. Estee’s writing style is somewhat polarizing, but check out Luna’s Lottery Lunacy or Naked Lunch and go from there (I’m not a fan of the crackfics, though). The Celestia Code is good, it’s sequels are less good.

If you don’t mind or enjoy humans: An Academic Visit by RustPony, the Pony Planet verse by Admiral Biscuit (starts with Celestia Sleeps In). The Non-Bronyverse (starts with No, I Am NOT a Brony, GET ME OUTTA EQUESTRIA!!!, forks into the canon Wanderings of a Non-Brony and the alternate TD the Alicorn Princess) is rather enjoyable, too, and the alternate continuity is much better than you’re probably thinking based on the title in the spoiler.

In less wordy options (around 10k or less): Moonlight Palaver by Carabas is quite good. The Writing On The Wall by Horse Voice is something I recommend to absolutely everyone, although “not dark and not sad” is not an accurate description (I found it in “The Library of Lovecraftian and Lovecraft-inspired Fiction”). Little Deceptions by Taranth is excellent. Cold Hearted (~12k) has the most remarkable ideas about Celestia, and I really don’t think it deserves the sad tag it has. If you like MTG at all, Story Shuffle by FanOfMostEverything is great (~40k words, but it’s a one-shotober collection of short short stories that are largely 1-2k so I’ll count it as “less wordy”).
Background Pony #FD56
“The Early Life of Blueblood” is pretty good. I only read it a month or two ago; Best fic I’ve read in a little while, and definitely my new favorite Blueblood fic. It does have some sad elements, but it’s not super sad.
