Sleep isn't real.

As Nurse Bloodlust began setting up for the day, everything went normally. She cleaned herself up, set up brand new surgical equipment, and checked her list of who the pony she would be operating on today, as well as the client who will be buying the parts. Just before she went to get today’s pony, something struck across her mind as she was finishing her preparations… Her assistant. The Nurse had an assistant named Penelope, who was a charming young mare she had hand crafted and stiched from the body parts of other ponies. She was always ready around this time, and if she was going to be late she would always put a notice a day ahead. It wasn’t necessary, but she did it anyway.

As the minutes ticked by, she still wasn’t here yet. "Penelope!", Nurse Bloodlust called out on the top of her lungs…. still no answer. She called her again, and even louder this time around. "PENELOPE! YER GONNA BE LATE, C'MON ALREADY DEAR!" As silence filled the room once again, a faint but audible reply came from Penelope’s room. "I-I'll be there in a minute Master... My left should has been bothering me all night and I haven't been able to get up..." This answer had Nurse Bloodlust concerned momentarily, but her minded slowly drifted away from the issue to getting back onto today’s task. Before you knew it, she was off finishing up preparations without her assistant. Besides, she would be there for the surgery. "Everything is going to be just fine, she's gonna be alright." The said to herself.

Just about everything was ready, the tools were in place, the tranquilizers and medication were organized, and the area had been throughly cleaned. And all of this without Penelope… and as well of a job she did, without her assistant it took about an hour longer than usually. Now all she needed was one more thing to start…the ‘patient’. And since the one scheduled for today was a stallion, she would need all the help she can get. Even with magic, the sheer size of this guy could have him easily overtake her. She needed Penelope, and pronto. She called out her assistant’s name again, and once again there was an answer. As she grew more again more impatient with her, she trotted her way back to the door to head back to see what all the fuss was with Penelope. It wasn’t long before she found her answer.

The moment she opened the door to the OR, she heard slow and uneven hoofsteps. As she looked around, she saw coming out of her room Penelope. She gasped in shock as she saw her assistant come her way. Her gait was wobbly and unbalanced, and would occasionally flare up her right wing to balance herself. She walked as if she had a very, very bad limp. In her mouth, she held a freshly severed leg that would twitch violently every 10 or so seconds apart from each one. It was a pale powdery blue and at the severed end there were drops of blood trailing it on the floor. As the nurse looked down on the side that she hobbled on the most she saw that her front left leg had come off. The wound, which was heavily bleeding but covered by a small rag, had blood stained around the area and on the floor, and dangling from the leg and beneath the small rag were some nerves. The remaining 3 hooves had been tinted crimson with the puddles of the blood on the floor in which they stepped in. Her eyes watered, though not in pain as many would imagine, but rather in guilt. Her big glossy eyes had stuck a direct gaze at her creator, like as if she were a dog who had done something wrong.

As shocked as The Nurse was, she was not horrified, or even surprised by this. When she had created Penelope… her stitching skills were less than perfect, even to this day they are still there to keep Penelope intact. Occasionally they’ll grow weak and her limbs will occasionally fall apart. This isn’t the first time this has happened and both know the drill of what to do. "Bloodyhell- C'mon now Penelope, I already have everything set up so might as well."

Once she propped her up onto the table, she slowly and carefully removed the rag from the wound to inspect it. The rag, while fairly clean, had some dust and sort in it. She probably grabbed whatever she could find first to stop the bleeding. She’s learning, but she still has quite a way to go.

"Oh Penelope... it isn't too bad, but with the rag you used I don't wanna risk you with an infection." She sighed as she looked into her assistant’s eyes. "Are we gonna use the Hydrogen Peroxide?" Penelope asked. Nurse Bloodlust answered back to her, "No Penelope. With the scale of your wound we're gonna havta to use the Rubbing Alcohol..." Penelope took in a deep breath of worry. "Do ya want a towelette, love?" As Penelope was looking for the word to say, she quickly switched it out for something else. "MMMMMH, yyeaa- No... No Towelette today, Master.." The Nurse’s eyes widened in surprise, the past times they’ve done this she always said yes to muffle hee screams. Well, well, well. Look who's being a brave filly today!", she said whole giving a small smirk. As inappropriate the timing was for her to act like that, Penelope didn’t mind at all. If anything it gave her more confidence for this! “Ready?”, the nurse asked as she dabbled the bottle’s contents onto a clean rag. Her assistant took in a deep breath and gulped before giving her a small and quick nod. "Alright... On the count of 3 now..." The duo counted in unison.

"1..."

"2..."

"3..."

As the Nurse placed and gently rubbed the rag on the wound, Penelope kept on saying to herself through the ordeal that she was ‘A Brace Filly.’ It all worked well until halfway through when the pain from the rubbing alcohol finally overcame her.

"...NOT BRAVE ENOUGH FOR THIS."
Soon afterwards her bloodcurdling screams left her lungs faster and louder than anything The Nurse has heard from her patients. She writhed in pain and the tears and flooded from her eyes like a dam had broken and all the water came spewing out of it. And in between and even during the screams, she had brought on an onslaught of of profanities and swears that had even appalled Nurse Bloodlust. She never said most of these words in her life, let alone in front of Penelope.

"Penelope, calm down please! We're halfway there, you need to calm down before the bleeding starts again!"

"NO I DON'T NEED TO CALM DOWN, I NEED SOME GODDAMN MORPHINE."

"Penelope, you don't need-"

"YES I DO, YES I DO YOU FUCKING-" In that moment Penelope lost her wording again as she cycled through a variety of swears to finish off that sentence with. Starting off with the first syllable before heading onto the next, she finally yelled at the Nurse calling her a “ninny”. While on any other situation she would just laugh it off, Penelope had said it so angrily and agressively it was hard to tell wether or not if she was sincere in it. Before she can say anything, Penelope’s rage became unintelligible gibberish with the only thing to come out was “morphine”, and she writhed and contorted harder with each passing one. She didn’t want to come to this, but she surpressed her assistant with her magic, and as hard as it was she managed to finish cleaning up the wound on th body.

In a soft, gentle, and tired voice, Nurse Bloodlust garnered Penelope’s attention. "Penelope, Penelope look at meach please? Look over here! We're done with your body wouud, I'm gonna patch it up for now to clean up your leg alright?" As she calmed down and loosened her jaw to speak, she only managed to utter out a small "Mmhm."

"Penelope, after I finish that, you're gonna go night-night so I can stich you right back up okay?"

"Yes.. Yes.. I got it.."

"Okay... Penelope love, you did good, you did good. This shouldn't take long clean up the leg."

After cleaning up the severed leg, she hooked Penelope up machines and gave her the tranquilizer. As her eyes drifted and struggled to stay open. She gave some final words before falling to the tranquilizer’s effects. While it was hard to understand under her slurred speech, she was the most honest for sure.

"N-Nuuurrrssse... Ah-Ahhm so ssarry.. Ah didn meanit... you are the bess fffrien anypony can have... Ah wuz jus angry an' ah needed away to geterout... Ah..." Penelope finally fell asleep. The Nurse, who listened to the whole thing and finally put all of it together was extremely touched. As she carefully lined up the leg to the open socket, she began on her work. Beginning with fusing the cartilage and ligaments in bewtween the bones, she went onto gently work with reattaching the nerves and fixing the veins, arteries, and tiny capillaries within the arm. As good as she was taking ponies apart, putting them together was something she had a big mow trouble with. Even with something like this happenin before, she still felt anxious that she would go wrong somewhere. As she finished reconnecting the muscles and their delicate tissues, she grabbed the needle and threaded it with more than enough thread to sew her arm back. With precision and ease, she had sewn in and out of the arm and body. She always had done it in a way that would keep the limb and body together for a long time, though at this point she is considering of asking someone within the market to help her with a more permanent solution. It was a difficult task since Penelope was an amalgamation of different ponies, and the different parts wouldn’t heal together properly. Regardless, she still tried her best to make it work.

After she was done sewing the two together, she turned off most of the machines and transferred Penelope back to her room. Carefully levitating her onto the bed and making sure none of the needles embedded into her arms or the equipment got astray. She softly laid on her a blanket so she wouldn’t get cold, and afterwards brought in a chair and sat there by her side.

After an hour of waiting, a small yawn came from the pegasus as she opened her eyes. Her sight was hazy, but as it cleared up, she looked around to see she was in her room. A muffled, but familiar voice caught her attention as she turned her head to side. There she saw a blue unicorn in a nurse’s outfit, and as her vision finally cleared up and focused together on her saw that there was exhaustion in those eyes of her’s, but the smile gave her a feeling that it was worth it regardless. Drowsy from the effects of the medication, she moved her mouth to say something but all that came out were quiet unintelligible mumbles.

"Shh.. It's okay. It's over now dear. Yer gonna be sore and have some nasty bruising for the next few days, but it'll pass in no time. Now before you do anything, can you do something for me? It's real easy I promise!" Penelope weakly nodded and smiled at her. "Good, see your blue hoof? I need you or move that for me, even if it's just a wiggle. Got it?"

Without saying a word, Penelope compiled. Not only wiggling the hoof but bending the elbow joint and raising it slightly. There were a few involuntary twitches in between, but they were only minor ones that they can work through to stop it. After she laid her arm back down, The Nurse grabbed on to the hoof and with the other she firmly rubbed down the arm. "Penelope, you feel this?" Nurse Bloodlust asked to make sure that she can feel in this arm as well. Judging by the calm expression on her face and the quiet little "yes", she certainly can is enjoying it. After all the trauma it was put through, this was a like a small massage to help relieve her arm from the trauma. Knowing how much this was helping, she continued on rubbing. As she continued, she went up farther on the arm, and Penelope just kept enjoying it. "Oh you poor thing... How did this happen?..." Penelope looked back at her, and wanted to reassure her that everything was fine. "Master... I'm alright. I don't know either, but it doesn't matter now! I'm fine, you did good! And you don't have to worry because everything is going to be alright... okay?" Just all of that talking left her exhausted all over again as she let out a big yawn and lidded her eyes. Bloodlust was at a loss of words, the only thing she managed to reply was a nod to show she understood. "Penelope, you should rest now... the next few days are gonna be a bit backlogged, but that's fine. When you're ready to get back to work, things should be going normal again... Now then, let me find you a snack and some juice and you rest up now."

"Mmhm..."

The moment The Nurse left the room, Penelope’s eyes began to slowly shut as she drifted off into sleep. After today, both would definitely need some time to recover from it.

The End.
