"Uncanny Valley" Removal

Mishka

Call this a little extreme, but I think the uncanny valley tag should either be replaced with the tag “uncanny” or be removed altogether. I have been looking through many posts with the tag even though none of them fall into it. The uncanny valley, by definition is a specifically humanoid figure or object that so closely resembles a real human face/figure but not quite, making it uncanny to the eye. But due to the way humans evolved, the uncanny valley can not apply to anything non-human. This also means that a human face that is clearly a drawing can be uncanny, but still does not fall into the uncanny valley because we are aware that it is a drawing/2D, (not a threat) The uncanny valley would usually apply to a real human face that look slightly off, a doll with a very realistic face or a 3D model. A not very well known fact about the uncanny valley is that it’s extremely hard to actually draw something that falls into it. My proposal is that the tag be removed, replaced with “uncanny” or before you use it, you are prompted with an exact description of what it actually means.

While I agree that the tag is a little overused (and overlaps with nightmare fuel/creepy to some degree), I think your argument about non-human things is poorly defined, and the bit about drawing is anything but fact, as artists approach the level of photorealism.
Take this, for example:

It’s a drawing, certainly. And it achieves its creep factor by using human features, sure, but it’s definitely non-human. By my reckoning, this image is the perfect candidate for the tag; by yours, it wouldn’t even qualify. What would, then? Exclusively human/humanized 3D and photo work? Less than 20 images out of the current nearly 600 fit the definition you propose.

@WingbeatPony
Precisely.
Hence my proposal..
“Uncanny valley” as a concept, doesn’t really fit in a pony-themed environment. My “bit about the drawing” is correct. That drawing is uncanny, but it does not apply to the uncanny valley, in fact, I’d bet that there are only a very small handful of artworks on this page that actually fall into the uncanny valley.

Here’s a genuine example of Uncanny Valley
