Should there be a G4 tag now, given "G4.5" is a thing?

Before G5 comes out, given there’s a G4.5-ish, should the current pics (or at least screencaps) be mass tagged with G4 in preparation? Making a thread instead of a post since it seems to have been drowned out by others.

No. Don’t see a point to a ‘g4.5’ tag either when pony life already has and is a tag.

G4 is the default generation. Default doesn’t need a tag.

I’m no fan of “default” tags either, but it seems like that argument never holds water anymore around here.
 
Personally, I’m fine with just getting aggressive about tagging Pony Life and G5 related images and leaving G4 content be.

I can see there being a need to separate out the gens. And I think having a gen 4 tag along with a gen 5 when it comes out would be good.
 
Honestly, given we already knew that there would most likely be more generations after this one, we really should have been having it tagged already as a future proofing measure.
 
Right now the main concern is the scope of the task. Even with staff mass-tagging tools it would be a long an arduous project. Heck even “pony” is still on-going, not to mention other species/gender tags.  
Most likely way to do it would probably be a dev going in and super-mass adding the tag to everything without a different generation tag.

The problem is that it’s only “default” until G5 is out in full. Then G5 is the “default”.
 
Not tagging “pony” was insisted on since Derpibooru is “default” pony unless otherwise tagged. But after some time it was seen how harder it was to search for ponies without having to - a bunch of tags.
 
Heck, apparently when Derpibooru started, there was no “safe” tag since everything was considered Safe by default unless given a different rating tag.

G4 didn’t necessarily need a comprehensive tag previously, on account of being the “default” gen – it had enough content compared to everything else that it was easier to simply tag every other gen and assume that untagged images were G4 – but I think there’s a very good possibility that that won’t be the case for much longer, especially once G5 drops. It’s of course impossible to know what the future will be like, but I think it’s fairly likely that we’ll be getting the same influx of screencaps and fanart that we do now for G4.
 
I don’t think we need a G4.5 tag as such, since there’s only one show for it and it’s already got a tag, but I do think we may end up needing a G4 tag further down the line. Once we have enough G5 material here (and presumably G6, G7, and so on further on, depending), simply going by context to tell what image pertains to which gen probably won’t be a very good system anymore.
 
More succinctly – I don’t think we need a dedicated G4 tag now, but I definitely think we’ll end up needing one sooner rather than later.

There is a G4 tag, it just needs to be expanded in usage organically, akin to the ‘pony’ tag. Just don’t discourage using it.

Here’s the thing about this whole, G name. You’ve got the G’s and the outliers, like EQG and the new show, which use their titles as the tag. In the future, if the production of a new show decides to name a show the same name as a previous iteration of the franchise, numbered G’s are probably the safer bet.  
I’d like for the show names to overtake the G tyranny, but there are many shows that have used like the same name, like, TMNT shows. Or movies that used the exact same generic name as the show/s, like Pokemon ones.
 
and for the G4 tag, don’t almost all images exist in relation to G4 since this site’s creation? Maybe adding it to all images lacking a G/show name tag isn’t the safest, but it seems like the most sensible move here, but that can probably be done at any point, by checking back uploads by dates of upload before the first of EQG even.

I’m sorry, “organically expanded” on two million images? If G4 is to be used, it needs to be added directly via database, not via the UI.
