The artist has asked that their tags not be merged. They want them kep separate.

@Exhumed Legume

Thank you :)

• artist:thomaskasrkin, artist:cantershirecom1 → artist:cantershirecommons - Done, and links updated.
• artist:tomez → artist:tummygut - Done.

@miseriaArt - Looks like they’re all done. Sorry for the delay replying to you here.

@Background Pony #72E3 - Thank you :)

@miseriaArt - It’s no trouble, and the User Link stuff is handled by a whole team of assistants, so that’s always a much faster way to get those kinds of changes made. For things like retagging entire galleries, this thread is better, but much slower … sorry.

@rannius - Done.

@TexasUberAlles - The artist has requested that those tags remain separate.

• artist:daiidalus, artist:vhsscrooge, artist:vhs_scrooge → artist:murderdaiida - That was a bit of a mess … I went with “artist:daiidalus” to match their Twitter.
• artist:snuckums_ → artist:snuckums - Done.
• artist:hk19901115 ,artist:noupu1115, artist:eropu1115, artist:eropu → artist:noupu - Done.
• artist:skitterpone → artist:skitter - Done. And thank you for providing the links. I updated those as well.

@Valghern - Hmmm … they deactivated their DA as soon as they created it, so we’re going to let this dog lie, as they say. If something changes, we can deal with it then, but for now it doesn’t look like that artist wants that new tag.

I think I once suggested that a note be added to one of the tags specifically saying that they’re to be kept separate, so people stop asking.

We have literally hundreds of artists (I think - I don’t have a way to specifically sort on that, but it seems like more than several dozen, at least) who have separated their tags and don’t want “My art set A” ever associated with “My art set B”. They do not want the relationship of the tags publicly linked, so adding a public note saying that they shouldn’t be publicly linked would violate the artist’s wishes. In some cases we even go so far as to delete the requests for aliases because that’s more “public recognition” of the links than the artists are comfortable with. So, for now, this is the system that we’ve got. It may be cumbersome and periodically frustrating, but it does get the job done.

On this site, each of those artist tags is linked to a separate profile, each of which has its own set of images, badges, and history on the site. I asked them about this a year ago, but this is what they wanted.

What they are doing doesn’t break any of our rules. And we’re going to respect their wishes.

@Exhumed Legume - We are talking with the individual(s) in private. If, hypothetically speaking, that were one person and they didn’t want it made public on this site that they are the same person, then making it public then it is against our rules to make it public. Please drop it.

@DJG & @Dogman15 - If an artist tells us they do not want the tags merged, then we do not merge them. If an artist tells us they do not want that information discussed publicly, then we respect their wishes and do what we can to not discuss it publicly. Most of the time people respect this. Will you two please respect this? We’re getting into a Rule #8 situation here, and I hope you will drop it.

That might work. But it confirms that the artist is masquerading as someone else, and sometimes that’s enough for us to lose all of the artist’s work from the site. Also the artists being discussed have not given us permission to do that.

@Dogman15 & @Exhumed Legume

Normally situations like this happen when an artist has asked for a site-wide takedown of all of their art. And the arrangement we’ve made of their tags was the result of negotiating a way for their art to remain on our site.

When that kind of situation happens, we add moderation notes to the tags to make sure that no one ever merges the tags, or makes the information that these two tags are one artist public, because that could trigger a site-wide takedown again. Each artist has a different situation and every takedown has is own specific needs and requirements for us to preserve whatever art is left on the site. And if any of those conditions are violated then the art is gone.

This is not hypothetical - I just received a PM from an artist who we’d set up with a hidden artist tag a half year ago, asking for their art to all be deleted off of the site. Was it because they got talked about here? Not sure - not interested. I’m just trying to find ways to make artists happy with how their art is organized here. And if the solution is separate artist tags, and we can’t comply with the agreement that resulted in their art remaining here, or if we can’t keep their secrets, then they have the option of just having it all deleted.

So, for some artists, just saying “This artist tag is owned by someone who has another artist tag” is enough for them to “NOPE” right off of the site. For others, not so much.

For each artist, we try to set up what they are comfortable with, and we try to preserve it and deflect attention if they don’t want it made public that they have more than one artist tag. If the artist chooses to publicly talk about their art in a way that we are not permitted to, that’s their call. Them saying “This is me” doesn’t mean that we have permission to say “That is them”, too.

With some artists, we’re in a situation where asking them a single question about their artist tags could cause a complete takedown. With others we still have some flexibility and can discuss options with them.

In the case that @DJG keeps referring to, we do not have any flexibility, and need to preserve what the artist has asked for. That is our obligation to them. I’ve gone through the images and where the artist themselves did not add both of their tags I’ve removed the inappropriate tag. But if they artist themselves tagged both of their tags on the image, that’s their call and we’re not going to over-ride it.

If it seems like this is something that we made up along the way, but has helped us to retain a large number of artists whose art we didn’t want to see leave the site, and each artist has a slightly different arrangement that is all handled via the same Rule #8-style policies, then you are seeing this clearly.

@Exhumed Legume
That is the artist’s call - they have the right to do that if they want to. On this site, we do not have permission to do that for them. In fact, the current constraints we are working under require us to prevent it from happening.

@Dogman15
I can not discuss the details, but if we did that in this case then I’m pretty sure we’d be looking at a full takedown.

@Exhumed Legume
On this site, that is how they want their art presented. If you are aware of an artist or member using multiple names/aliases to keep content separate (such as clean vs sexual content), or using an alternative name as to not be identified, do not call them out or publicly highlight such a fact.
