we do. nobody else uses that tag; i can’t condone doing something to piss off an entire subset of our userbase. it’s not the first tag we’ve technically used incorrectly for the sake of convenience or the community.

I’m pretty sure that’s his point. The meaning of the word has been co-opted in this fandom. Same with “plot,” which I may remind you is not actual horse anatomy terminology, and instead is a word that has transcended the meme it came from.

That makes me wonder, is there a separate tag for non-hybrid satyrs? Do they show up often enough to warrant a separate tag for people who might not want to have to sift through pictures of the 4chan hybrids to get to what they want?

“satyr, -hybrid, -offspring”. If the 4chan satyrs don’t have “hybrid” or “offspring”, they’re likely tagged incompletely.
 
There is also “satyrized” for satyr versions of non-satyr characters.

Wouldn’t that only apply to the cases that are so extremely rare here, that it’d be pointless?  

 
Pretty sure the current tags cover it well enough. Trying to shove in another specific tag for a specific [and small] subgroup doesn’t really seem necessary.

What would we change it to if we’re changing things to differentiate them?

Having had some time to think about it: might it be simpler to just tag the “traditional” satyrs as faun? The difference is mostly academic, and it’s a preexisting (albeit, admittedly, little used) tag already.

There’s probably a lot of incomplete tagging, then – searching “satyr, -hybrid, -offspring” nets like fifty pages of images (about the same for “satyr, -hybrid, -offspring, -satyrized”, only slightly less), and most are still of the fanon type, either offspring or satyrized, in both cases.

That can easily be fixed with some mass-taggin tools. I just need to know what we’re counting as what.
 
What’s a “traditional” satyr? The horse/pony bottom with human top?  
Leaving the offspring tag in, [since many satyrs are OCs that are the children of a pony and human.] Leaves roughly 3,743 images. Not counting the several that need tags fixing for hybrid and -erized. That’s almost the entire tag.

That was the idea, yes, I was suggesting a tag name for the exceedingly rare case where an actual, mythologically-accurate satyr was depicted, in the event that someone deems such a tag worth differentiating. It’d imply the existing satyr tag, with no change to its definition or usage. I used the term “classical” to be consistent with the classical unicorn tag, which is for cryptozoogically accurate unicorns, not pointy-head marshmallow cats. :D

As someone who loves characters like Pogo, Hope and Darcy, I’d be extremely salty if the satyr tag was suddenly up-ended, yes. Trying to argue that it shouldn’t be tagged like that is just begging for another round of “but futa technically means” nonsense.

I don’t see how the idea of maybe adding an extra tag is anything bad.
 
Sure we all know how the hippogriff fans went with that idea, but literally nothing was untagged at all here.
 
There’s no need for anyone to be upset at all.

Well, when a mod says “I don’t like this tag, why is it used like that” usually it implies they want to change it, hence starting a discussion. Unless the mod is just complaining for complaning sake. But they would never do that, right?

I’ve mentioned this before, but you have a habit of framing all of your questions about the purpose of tags in a way that’s mildly to severely threatening. I’m sure you don’t mean to, based on your reaction, but reading the posts that start these conversations it’s hard to see what you could have meant otherwise.
 
The real issue, I think, is that you always talk about how you don’t like how a tag is used when you ask about it. That’s not really necessary, it’s implicit in any question about a tag’s usefulness or definition. I don’t know if this will help, but next time, try phrasing it like this: “I thought this tag meant __, but I see people using it on images like ___. Why are we using it this way?”

that’s something that could really better be discussed privately instead of in the tagging forum. you make it sound like lb started a huge fight or something when all she did was bring up an issue that was discussed for a bit =[

I think someone here brought it up before, but why does canon x oc not imply shipping? All the tags listed in the “implied by:” bit have it. The tag description even says that it is for an oc being shipped or having sexual acts with a canon character.
