I find that canon character only threads don’t tend to do very well. Although strangely I’ve seen a few threads that just have 2 people in them and go on for YEARS. The modern derpi crowd, or the few of us that are left crave content, not another canon character only sex thread.

Try having one in your roleplay, nobody wants to play as shitty characters from the show. We all have an Oc. Mine are very deadly, fast creatures that i invested a lot of time in making.

The RPs I’ve played in that have stood out to me are ones made by RobotPony and Rook, even a couple made by Pizzamovies. Those RPs were rich in story and were run very well. None of us will really make something like those magnificent people did, but still. Story is important, and so is the way you present the RP - not just in the beginning post, but throughout the RP.  
It’s hard to make something that actually stands out nowadays.
