I haven’t watched that much G5, but what I have seen feels primarily targeted towards the younger viewers, rather than the whole family. Even moreso than the early seasons of FiM, frankly. Not a bad thing, just how it feels to me.

While I don’t mind the Legion of Doom getting petrified, I personally don’t think Tirek was beyond redemption, but he’d definitely need to have a heart-to-heart with his brother and father.

As fast as it happens, Starlight’s turn in Season 5 remains my favorite. The voice acting, the dialogue, the music, the setting, it all just clicks for me. Has the right amount of gravitas

The desktop ponies are cute. Besides, it’s 2024, I feel most people don’t really feel like pulling big pranks, since we’re always one step away from outrage. I mean, other sites aren’t really doing big April 1st things either.

Most shows from the early 2000s to 2010s were episodic, because executives prefered that format. Easier to get someone into the show if they can just watch any episodes. Frankly, I think everything having to have an overarching plot now might eventually become tiring in itself. Variety is nice. Both have its merits.

And there are great kid shows currently out there, I think to call them all braindead is narrow-minded in itself.

I always assumed they showed us neither because you’d need to design a TON of assets, and background characters.
That’s always the catch with new locations.

Also, I disagree about the lessons. This show is about friendship lessons, it should stick with that. The problem is that the Mane 6 didn’t really have that much to learn by the end, so they had to make them regress to make certain premises work. I think FiM’s big problem is that it had all these side characters that could fill up an entire season by themselves, but utilized them sparingly. Like, Starlight’s friend group could be the focus of several episodes, the Young Six could’ve used more episodes in season 8, and only two Pillars actually had any focus. Instead, they don’t know what to do with ‘em and Non-Compete Clause happens. Maybe some higher-ups were afraid that because the Mane 6 were the main draw, then it shouldn’t stray away from the too often.

Oh, I got it. My wording was very much intentional in the original post. Though, I didn’t count on someone making the joke that quickly, hah.

The .gif just reminded me how there is even more precedent on vehicles being powered by spells, so I focused on that.

Oh yeah, the ‘come-to-life’ spell. Completely forgot Twilight casually whipped that up.

The carts are powered by plot. Theorizing about how they work in-universe is fun, but it’s been almost 8 years since that episode aired, and, personally, at no point was I like ‘how is this technicolor equine zooming around in a go-kart with no engine?’ The girls do show up at the end in mechanic jumpsuits, complete with oil stains, implying there are engines involved in the second version of carts.

Now the track, I do question, cause it seemed designed to prompt a collision…

I always assume tech is fueled by magic in Equestria, unless stated or implied otherwise, since that’s how Flim and Flam powered the Cider Squeezy all the way back in season 2.

She spent the majority of her life cooped up in a pound with practically zero privacy, and no one she actually liked. Then if what Vicky’s been saying is true, she made a fool out herself at the last party. Not surprising she sees a crowd, and feels a tad overwhelemed, especially since everyone was enjoying Bee’s perfomance, but being new to it, Loona was simply weirded out. It’s the feeling of ‘everyone knows everyone, everyone’s in on everything, but me’. She knows Tex, but barely, and despite her crush, she can’t really compete with the Sin of Gluttony herself. Makes her even more alienated. So she doesn’t feel at ease until Blitz arrives, since he’s a familiar presence. Also that hound hitting on her probably helped.

It might be that a lot of the cast are 6+ feet tall twigs with bowties. I do agree we could use some more diverse body types in our regulars, though obviously Niffty, Vaggie, and Husk do provide some difference because short.

Gotta be honest, I never understood the ‘overdesigned’ complaint. A complex design being animated is very impressive to me. I concede there are some cluttered designs out there, but Hellaverse’s been quite good at avoiding too much unnecessary detail. It’s why they ditched the gradient in Husk’s eyebrows from the Pilot, for example. If I had to point out the busiest design Viv ever came up with it’d definitely be Beelzebub, and even then I consider it solid, though admittedly there is a lot going on there. Background extras being unique is also a plus in my book.

I’m fine with creators venting as long as it’s entertaining. Even if all those opinions were not entirely Larson’s, someone at DHX clearly had some things to say. And that’s fine.

Fame and Misfortune would feel out of place…if it weren’t for the fact that people projecting onto irl public figures and treating their lives as a story is very much a thing. Just look at Harry Styles and that friend he was shipped with…

One criticism about Pipp I never got is ‘we don’t need an influencer character”. We’re in the 2020s, if there was a time that the target demographic might wanna become an internet persona when they grow up, and might benefit from showing them the benefits AND pitfalls of it, it’s now.

Now, the execution is up for discussion, but ‘we don’t need this type of character’ always read to me like a bunch of old people yelling the world is changing, and they don’t like it.
