Trixie is overconfident and a bit megalomaniacle, While last time we actually got to see Luna in depth she was socially awkward fish out of water with a whole baggage of regrets. From what we saw in “sleepless in ponivile” she seem to do better, but that don’t mean that she grew out of all her character traits.
Also both characters have fought and lost against their own jealousy, giving them a common flaw that they both need to overcome.

Remember, after she took the amulet off, she still was being evil, it wasn’t until she was ‘defeated’ that she began to apoligize. I’m not saying she is evil, she just is susceptible to becoming evil. Like Luna.

Luna being a bad teacher and Trixie being a bad student is what makes this idea interesting. There is a lot of place for drama in a situation like this, and many opportunities for both characters to face their own weaknesses and grow.

The fact of the matter is Trixie is 2nd most talented unicorn, Boast Busters proved this so kinda likely she is a gifted unicorn. Most unicorns only know TK even Shining Armor was limited to 2 spells.

Word of Faust is don’t listen to Word of Faust so using that is dumb
She just gives us that stuff to play with, but she has said time and time again the stuff she says ISN’T canon until the current writers make it canon

And as for does she has the potential?
She do and pay close attention to Boast Busters when she bests AJ, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash. Especially Rainbow Dash, she made a tornado out of her rainbow, SHE BENDED LIGHT! She has talent, there is a reason she is Poniranger-Pink in my fic, but as for power… well maybe some reading & TKing weights can fix that… maybe… I hope boasting one’s magic can done just like getting in shape…

Sombra’s an end level boss villain, and dead. Starswirl we’ve never seen, and he could have just be a theorist with no actual casting power. And he’s also dead. Shining we’ve seen cast a grand total of two spells; the shield, which is his special talent, and a laser beam, which did nothing and is likely standard royal guard unicorn training stuff.

Their commonality (corruption and redemption) would make a good starting point, and I honestly wouldn’t mind if they canonized my headcanon that Trixie’s talent relates to magical items, so the resources that Luna could provide for her could actually make those claims of being “Great and Powerful” far more deserving.
Plus, I would love to have that much ham on screen at the same time.

Well I guess to expand on my bland “yes”, Trixie is the second most talented unicorn we’ve seen on the show, and she’s had a past of being overshadowed by someone better and trying to seek revenge/show them up.
So yeah, it’s something Luna could could work with, talent wise, and relate to, peronality/history wise.

Well the arrogance thing would actually better the case, as Luna herself has experienced a powertrip herself, in the form of being full of herself (as Nightmare Moon, and the jealousy thing) and corruption of power, so really Luna has that first hand experience, and would be the best mentor to a potential magic focused unicorn.
And I dunno, I always saw Twilight and Trixie asthe “neo” Celestia and Luna, Twilights cutie mark is a s
large star surrounded by smaller ones, whilst Trixie’s has a crescent moon.
