Trolling artists (or anyone, really) is against Rule #0 and is a bannable offense that we harshly punish.
If seeing downvote count on your images hurts your feelings, we have a setting to hide it:

No need. I’ve already asked for my art to be removed from the site and I’m going to see myself out. Regardless of hiding a vote count, you’ve allowed the vote to be a metric used against the votes of those that want to promote an image they found appealing. Allowing the downvote button to exist at all only serves to stroke the ego of the narcissistic users that feel anyone cares about their pessimism at all. Additionally, given your response to mine to claim this is a matter of “hurts my feelings” goes to show that you’re actually part of the problem. I don’t know what I expected from a site with the word “Derpi” in it, but it was definitely more class than that response. Enjoy living in 2011. Tell Liamwhite to come join the rest of us in the modern dev world. I’m out.

Downvotes exist because a good deal of fandom content isn’t “art” and is just memes and edits, which don’t violate any rules, but are often… not all that worthy of attention. This site’s predecessor had downvotes as a way for some users (the ones who could actually load a page in under two minutes) to moderate the worth of such content given the lack of moderation, and the concept of “users moderating bad memes” was carried over here.
An attempt was made 3-4 years ago to replace downvotes with personal image hiding; the results were a boatload of pants shat over freedom of speech or whatever and the volunteers running this place just didn’t want to deal with all the screaming and whining and insults. Given ~recent events~ I very much doubt that those in the decision making chairs will want to try any changes with the potential to have more shitty-pissies.
As a side note, don’t use money or donations, either giving or withholding, as a tool to institute change. I can assure you that it will not only not work.

This isn’t an effort to bribe anyone, but a comment about why I’m apprehensive to click the “help support us financially” button. I’m a web dev and as such, I support several sites and solo devs through platforms like patreon. My decision to support those sites was heavily influenced by the merits of those running it. None of them feature ways to troll the artist or make public cynicism a regular occurrence.

If what you say is fact and the site devs here decided to reinstate a downvote button because of cries from the worst offenders about “Free speech” then my mind is made up and this isn’t a place for me or my work.
Thanks for the responses.

I’ve never been to an art show or contest that allowed viewers or judges to make a public note or mark the art pieces they didn’t like. It’s just tactless.

on the technical side I can tell you that there is no such ability for you to look at the things other users downvoted. You can only look at your own downvotes, and only if you type in a specific query to look at them.

This is my point. Why is the button even here then? If I downvote something because it isn’t my cup of tea, why would I go through an archive of those things? And if no one else can see them (which why would anyone care to see them?) then the downvote button only serves one purpose outside of being improperly used to moderate content.. it serves the purpose of trolling the artist/submitter.

I will let staff speak on actual policy matters, but on the technical side I can tell you that there is no such ability for you to look at the things other users downvoted. You can only look at your own downvotes, and only if you type in a specific query to look at them. In contrast, anyone can look at your faves, and there are a couple of buttons for you to look at your upvotes.

If a downvote button is being used as a fallback for moderating content instead of simply for expressing your opinion of a particular piece of content, then it is being used incorrectly and the means by which the site is moderated is flawed. Furthermore, it serves no purpose in its existence on a properly moderated site. No one needs to know what someone didn’t like.. there isn’t a page that exists that says, “look at all this stuff that SeafoamSelene found boring.” That would be the most pointless page.

In my experience no. Reports are usually responded to fairly quickly. But as a former staff member I can tell you that lacking internal communication made it so that responses to the same problem on different days will generally be inconsistent.

As the title states. I made a post in general discussion - ask the mods - about it and received zero replies. I do not understand the necessity of the downvote button. It is an archaic internet trend that is only incorporated by this site and reddit, as far as I know. It promotes toxicity by giving a voice to a particular moment that doesn’t need to be recorded. If someone doesn’t like a post, they can just move on. If they like it, they can upvote it. If it breaks the rules for any reason, they can report it.
It’s a shame that for all the great things this site has going for it, it has chosen to play into the hands of antagonism.

Default search

If you do not specify a field to search over, the search engine will search for posts with a body that is similar to the query's word stems. For example, posts containing the words winged humanization, wings, and spread wings would all be found by a search for wing, but sewing would not be.
