My favorite Game Over scene is probably Banjo Kazooie’s. It still cracks me up.
Majora’s Mask’s firey moon crash scene was impressive too, special effects-wise the way the scary looking moon starts to catch fire, and sends a firey shockwave in all directions that you can’t escape no matter where you are.

Fun fact: DK64 was going to have lives, but it was cut; the only remnant of the system is an unused door in the Fungi Forest Lobby.

There’s actually been debate if the limited lives/Game Over system in games are an outdated feature meant for old arcade games to munch quarters.
There’s actually been debate if the limited lives/Game Over system in games are an outdated feature meant for old arcade games to munch quarters.
Some games like DK64 (a 1999 game BTW) and Mario Odyssey give you unlimited lives, and even ones that have that feature a Game Over isn’t a big deal, because of save files, and such now, making them almost pointless, and not much of a punishment, nor challenge to avoid.
Plus some games give you so many extra lives hidden in so many levels you’ll almost never see a Game Over screen anyway.

Origins has unlimited lives for all 4 of the classic games, so now you don’t have to worry about getting a Game Over at Sonic 2’s bullshit final boss.

I admit I wasn’t too fond of fake difficulty bosses like that considering you get no rings, so it’s “one mess up and you’re dead.”

I can beat the Sonic 1&2 bosses easy nowadays, but they were a pain just because of the one hit kill factor.

Y’alls already convinced me to try them, but I’m keeping them on the backburner until after I play the classic Sonic games.
Furthest I got was all the way to the Death Egg Robot boss fight when I was a kid and died to the thing’s first step. Never did make it back.

I liked all the options being a wizard gave me. Having an unlimited spellbook to draw on for different situations was great, except when I couldn’t cast spells. Sorcerer or paladin could be cool too.
