You know, we’re only talking about 140 miles of new wall, right?
On December 20, the Senate unanimously approved 65 new miles of proposed wall, or fencing, or spiky bollards - whatever Trump wants to call it. Plus an additional $20 Billion in support for border patrol and ICE for the southern border of the US. And the House was ready to sign it.
But between the night of December 20 and the morning of December 21, Trump decided he wanted 140 additional miles of wall, even though he has no idea where it would go.
This isn’t about “solve all of the problem” - this is about 140 miles of new wall that Trump doesn’t know where it would go or how much it would cost to buy the private land he wants to put it on.
Anyone who describes this shutdown as some sort of all or nothing situation for the wall (and you’re not doing that, I’m talking about some other people and news stations) is either completely misinformed, or wants OTHERS to be misinformed.
The whole shutdown is about the question of whether there should be 65 miles of new wall - which was budgeted and approved and ready to go and 100% of every Republican and Democrat Senator voted for, or 200 miles of new wall, 140 miles of which is just an undeveloped dream in the President’s head that has absolutely no specifics.
That’s it - the US government is shut down, and the 65 miles of approved wall is not being built, because the president wants a “Wall Slush Fund” that he doesn’t know how to use.

I’m kind of glad that one of the county-level Republican Party in the state I was born and live in weren’t completely assholish and allowed a man to stay on as vice chairman regardless of his religion.
Of course, I would have been happier if they hadn’t forced a vote on the issue in the first place, but what can you do?

That’s a classic Republican stunt though. Fabricate a problem then use that to push an agenda.
Most of the time it involves defunding institutions so they can use the resulting lack of success to dismantle it, but they could just as shamelessly use the trick for the wall.
The only good news however is that more and more Reps are wanting to end the shutdown now rather than continue this game of chicken. Problem is Trump and McTurtle do want to continue playing.

I don’t think the wall is necessary, you do, but at least you agree it’s not objectively the best solution. I think we should focus on more important matters myself. Drug reform, healthcare, and jobs. I don’t think shutting the government down because of a fucking wall is good, federal workers are getting back pay yes, but there are still agencies that are shutting down temporarily and Trump can’t just keep the government shut down for months, that’s not how it works, also border patrol is leaving their posts now so he’s making the immigration “issue” worse.

Maybe not from your perspective, to people who are affected by illegal immigration more, I’m sure they would disagree with you. Whether or not it’s a ‘huge problem’ is inherently subjective. Are problems not worth solving because you don’t think they’re a big deal?I don’t think that piracy is a huge problem, but I’m sure the copyright holders would disagree with me. That doesn’t me we just throw up our hands and allow piracy.
