Texas gives more than it takes
Only New Mexico pays less in taxes than it receives in support, so that’s not a big claim.
That said, a third of Texas’s state budget is paid for by the Federal government.
From 2000 to 2015, federal funds comprised between 29.9 and 40.8 percent of all Texas state revenue, and averaged about 34 percent … OMB reports state governments received federal grants totaling more than $661 billion in 2016. The Comptroller’s most recent Annual Cash Report estimated that 35.5 percent of Texas’ net revenue for fiscal 2016 came from the federal government Texas Comptroler
Then there’s the billions in federal assistance for Hurricane Harvey, and the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act together sent $76.7 billion to Texas. So, the Federal support to Texas may be higher now than it was in 2016.
@igotnopicks
I don’t think the US government would be happy letting a ‘foreign state’ control their only nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly facility (Pantex Plant). And I’m pretty sure Texas wouldn’t be happy having “some other country’s” nukes, military bases, naval yards, and other military installations inside their boundaries.
People talking about secession today are just crazy. State succession, maybe. But the actual process of successfully seceding from the union, after decades of federal investment in the military–industrial complex in every state to “spread the money and jobs around” is just nuts.

People often use the “Texas gives more than it takes” argument for secession. Ignoring the fact that is a poor metric for determining sustainability.

Quite literally no one believes secession would work, especially since it didn’t work the first time.
Even most of those who support keeping Confederate monuments up (which they shouldn’t) or don’t believe they fought to keep slavery (which they did) will tell you that in hindsight the Confederacy was an awful idea and they don’t want it back.

Ukraine will get long range ATACMS missiles with this aid package.
Without permission to strike inside Russia their effectiveness will be limited.
Still, better than nothing though. Good to see the US somewhat going gloves-off for once.

U mad?
It’s confirmed. Ukraine will get long range ATACMS missiles with this aid package. Putler’s goons better be ready to die.
And contrary to what Magats think, not all of the money is going directly to Ukraine. 23.2 billion will go to replenishing US arms stocks, while an equal amount goes to Ukraine. The rest is:
*11.3 billion for current US operations in the area
*13.8 billion for purchasing weapons systems, defense products and defense services
*26 million for monitoring the aid provided
So yeah most of the money will come right back to the US.

STOP KOSA!
“Civil Wars” are basically just “Fellow Neighbors slaughtering and blowing each other up.”
“Society Strife” is a more accurate term for conflict amongst the residents of a singular nation.

My friend saw it and loved it, and he’s as political as they come. It is deliberately vague about the political motivations behind the titular civil war, as Garland himself stated that the audience can decide that for themselves. Instead, the movie did its homework in realistically portraying the human impact that a civil war has on everyone caught up in it, and just happened to set it in the US to convey it in a way Americans would understand.
As an aside, if a civil war drags on long enough, it usually just devolves into a bunch of warlords and gangs murdering everyone who is not rolling with them. The stated political ideologies of the factions involved often get reduced to window dressing. So in a way the movie being vague about the warring sides’ politics is fitting.
There is nothing “civil” about a civil war, and my friend thinks the movie got that across quite well.

US is divided, but what that really means is that people’s opinions are divided. Those supposedly red or blue states are still very much divided internally. What’s more, while some people are clear cut Democrats or Republicans, others have complex political opinions. One person hates immigrants and wants to fight global warming. Another person wants to allow both abortion and machine guns.
The problem is that opinions are often extreme in both directions, that people feel very strongly about them, and that they are not willing to talk to each other. They only yell at each other and make memes about how the other side is evil, stupid, ugly, etc.
Politicians don’t mind it because they benefit from fanatical voters. America’s enemies are also happy; some try to stir it up as much as possible.

“National divorce”
Got to give Moscow Marge this one. She went through her own divorce so like a Karen she wants to make it everyone else’s problem.
But no, despite what a howler monkey pretending to be a person thinks, the country isn’t that divided. Red State/Blue State monikers imply bigger differences in their populations than there is.

I saw Civil War the other day and it was one of the best movies (that’s not part of a pre-existing franchise) I’ve seen in a long time.
What was Alex Garland smoking when he thought that Texas and California would be willing to form an alliance together? Those two places couldn’t be any more different. A Texas-Florida alliance would make much more sense because they’re very similar in almost every single way.

Could a national divorce work? It’s become clear for almost a decade that red states and blue states have fundamentally different values.
