“Powerless” and “sealed away” counts for very little in that series. Anyone is one artifact or “discovered a random spell” away from becoming a contender to destroy the world, and any sealed villain is one “stars” or “argument” or “expired curse” or “Tirek” away from breaking free at random. Show can’t do it that much and not expect to get a reputation for it; it’d be like me being surprised I have a reputation for drawing weird stuff and monsters. It’s not a bad reputation to have; a lot of shows have reputations like “Is full of terrible characters” or “Is just a terrible show” XD

Let’s be careful with exception, only Discord and Tirek really broke free, all the others were either already loose or busted free by an outside power. And honestly, the moon would be the right place for them because of that- you can only escape after a thousand years, which is very predictable and easy to prepare for. They’re fucked if they try anything- again, NMM came back at full strength, they won’t.

If you want to be technical, you can argue they decided to send the statue to the moon at some point after Twilight’s coronation or something, and nothing in canon would contradict it.

One probably underappreciated aspect of the statue thing is that while it gives the appearance of resolving the matter of the three decisively, it doesn’t actually close off any notable possibility for their futures. I’m still divided on if that’s brilliant or spineless.

The moon makes sense thematically for bookends, and in universe- there is nowhere more secure. No one can get to them to save them like a statue can be tinkered with, they can only break free under rare and predictable circumstances, and they are punished sufficiently. The moon is best.

 
Honestly, I think this idea of hers was one of the most disturbing aspects of the two-parter, not to say the mutilation threat among other things weren’t.
 
She seems to me like she doesn’t give a flying fuck how many have to die just so that she can gain absolute power, coupled with how she seemed to want to be seen as the savior.

I’m not saying it would’ve been a plot hole. I just think pulling a Lord of the Rings on them would’ve felt pretty tonally out of place considering the Sisters haven’t had that aura about them for seasons. They’re basically normal ponies at this point, just stronger.

The original version of Magic Duel was all I could’ve ever wanted from this show.
 
On another note, I could say this show overall fulfilled something for me, but it actually didn’t.

“Sealed away” in Equestria is an easy-in-easy-out ordeal. It’s like Arkham Asylum from Batman. It’s as good a reason for why a villain’s only now messing stuff up as any. For me it’s one of those funny aspects of a fantasy series that you’re supposed to take for granted– and I usually do– that’s fun to point out. Like, literally every “sealed away” character ever in ANY fantasy series busts out eventually. Better than Dragonball Z where literal death is just a slap on the wrist XD

There was only one known incident of escapes from Tartarus happening over a thousand years, and that was when Cerberus left his post. (I say “escapes” because the Bugbear escaped “years ago,” according to Slice of Life, if Bon Bon/Sweetie Drops is to be believed, and Tirek escaped in S2, in “It’s About Time”)

I’m a big fan of Legend of Neil a live-action parody of Legend of Zelda for that reason. They point out all the weird video-gamey things in it all the time. Like, the pause-while-the-screen-transitions is a thing in the show where he’s all like “What the fuck?!” XD

I just realized that yesterday marked five years since The Hub was transformed into Discovery Family.

It’s still thoroughly unfit for purpose - he did wander off, and there doesn’t seem to be any monitoring of whether inmates are actually present. (Plus, Cozy was able to exchange mail with Tirek. Seriously, that’s one of the plot holes I most wanted an answer to.)

The throne itself was only like a season old.
 
Now I could see her realising that ruling had never been her thing and it was trying to fit such a role that had driven her to Nightmare - but you’d need ot actually show that.
 
Then again, we don’t see any sign she’s giving up her actual night job.
