Regarding Marks for Effort, I don’t really hold Twilight accusing the CMC of sabotage against her.
Would you expect Twilight’s first instinct to be “this crying child who is trying to manipulate me?” Seriously, Cozy Glow probably threw on a show in front of her like “I don’t understand, the CMC taught me everything…” and did it very well.

The idea is that believing the CMC really did it is crazy. It’d be way out of the ordinary for them to trick somebody like that, especially given their aversion to bullying. From Twilight’s PoV, it should seem far more likely that there’s some kind of misunderstanding than any malice at work.

Nevertheless, him having something bad happen and reacting in an innocent and lovable way, like being bummed and needing a hug, instead of turning into a violent destructive empathy-lacking abuser is one of many reasons he’s way more lovable than the alternative :D

I’d assume it’s because he enrolled at the school and got accepted while Starlight was too busy taking her anger out on others :P
Except the thing that kind of cemented her dislike of cutie marks and eventual slide into villainy was the fact that she never heard from him after he left, so that seems unlikely to have been the case.

Doesn’t she know the CMC better than that, though? And even if not, does she not at least respect them enough as people to seek some proof rather than just hurl accusations? Like, that’s a pretty harsh accusation to pull out of an assumption and put on someone you claim to have affection and respect for :/

I guess, but I’d think that would be all the more reason to give the benefit of the doubt. There’s the very real possibility that the CMC had nothing to do with the fail, like maybe Cozy’s a struggling student and she blamed the CMC out of shame to make herself look innocent, or maybe there’s a problem with her curriculum :P

Keep in mind that all throughout the episode, the CMC really wanted to attend Twilight’s School and by that point, Twilight became aware of that after their many rejections and she thought that the CMC deliberately sabotaging someone else’s entry exam would mean that they would be next in line to get in, and she expected better from them since like you said, she knows them personally.

I still don’t understand why the CMC couldn’t go to Twilight’s school. The only valid reason might be they’re too young (which is dubious for all sorts of reasons), but that was never even mentioned. You’d think Twilight would love having pupils like those three in her classrooms as living proof of her point.

They already understood friendship well enough that there was no need for them to be there, the CMCs just don’t have it in them to be diplomats or missionaries either, and acepting them would be giving Neighsay more reasons to attack the school (”…enticing schoolfoals away from the established accredited institutions to join her extralegal establishment…”).

- That’s what Twilight claims, there’s no evidence to support it. They’re more knowledgable than your average pony, but not by a whole lot.
- “Surf and/or Turf” says otherwise. In fact, a lot about them does- they are very accommodating and diplomatic people. And don’t give me crap about missionaries, they call themselves crusaders, I’m pretty sure they can evangelize like you wouldn’t believe.

Didn’t see the edit, my bad. My counter to that is two parted: first, the CMC are the younger sisters of school staff, exceptions can be made. Second, there are so many mixed signals regarding their age it’s not even funny, but I think it’s safe to say that “foals” is no longer an accurate description of them.

It just seems like a cold and undeserved accusation, and quite a leap to go from “they want to join my school” to “they’re actively sabotaging students to force their way in”. Like, at the very least don’t they deserve the benefit of the doubt? Couldn’t she have at least confronted them without hostility, like asked them what happened and heard their side BEFORE she started yelling? That’s what friends do for each other :/

I forgot that she yelled at them! That raises the question: why didn’t Applejack, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash chew her out for it? She didn’t even go to them with her concerns, she just went straight for yelling at her friends’ sisters. That’s gotta be a good way to get the cold shoulder.

Admittedly, it did and yes they deserved the benefit of a doubt. Either way, the rest of the episode was great and funny so this scene didn’t drag it down for me, plus it had the virtue of having a funny “your mom” joke.

Anyway, Twilight wasn’t perfect in that episode… but it wouldn’t be the first time she’d jumped the gun on accusing someone.
Remember what happened with Chrysalis in A Canterlot Wedding, and how Twilight dropped the ball on accusing fake-Cadance?

That’s harsh enough, honestly: how low of an opinion must she have of them to think they’re cruel, vindictive liars who she needs to keep away from her students when the two teachers who nearly killed a student got a free pass? :/
