shortest answer possible, it effectively destroyed literally everything the show has ever established about or done with discord: what made him a threatening villain, an interesting character, and his entire redemption arc, by writing his past self as a well-intentioned nice guy stuck in an abusive relationship with another character who was actually responsible for all the evil stuff during his reign. take a wild guess which of these two it falls under:

It feels good. I normally refrain from really tearing into a point as a courtesy of debate, but man it feels good to let loose. Fuck Angel, he’s worth more to the world in a stew and I’ll die on that hill.
 
That said… what did Fluttershy do to you? She’s not best pony, but she’s not a vile scumbag. She truly cares about people, and is the gentlest, kindest character in the show.

a lot of little things. to her credit some are outdated due to character development. every episode ever was “learns to nut up”, nothing really interesting about her, she’s a complete pussified doormat and the show thinks it’s kindness. usual stuff.

Except for the countless times we’ve been shown that she couldn’t give a single fuck about her own race when it comes down to choosing between them and ANY kind of animal. That facade of kindness hides some truly awful shit when you think about it, and while her flipping the fuck out during The Best Night Ever is what essentially got me into this fandom, the character development she’s got since still reeks of someone that just acts kind but would shank you in the back whenever they could.
 
Remember Bats? Or Power Ponies? Or that one episode she develops multiple personalities disorder for the lulz?
 
Her character growth since the start of the series had been the least healthy by far, not only is she stuck in a Groundhogs Day loop of repeating the same “How not to be shy” lesson with only minor variants, what little development she’s got shows that it’s always been one step forward and two steps back.

To explain how I like to see Discord as he was as a villain, exactly, he absolutely wasn’t a murderous maniac, because while he’s absolutely capable of killing with his powers, he generally doesn’t (unless you can actually threaten his life, then the gloves are off if he’s left with no choice), because that reduces the amount of overall chaos he can get with his “toys,” cut down on how much enjoyment you can get from mentally tormenting them, since they’re less interesting dead.
 
Also, he does vastly favor having the ponies “open the door” to their minds so to speak, over brute forcing it, because it’s more interesting for him to do it that way.
 
If any of the above weren’t true, then Return of Harmony would’ve gone very differently.

Explain how the Siege of the Crystal Empire comic is canon to the actual show’s timeline then, with citations. Do we have a reformed Sombra in existence…? Is Radiant Hope something more than dust by now, if she existed?

it’s pretty telling that the only thing that “proves” they are canon is that one of the idw writers claims hasbro said so… while the things that prove they aren’t are the show staff’s reluctance to address it and the events of the show itself.

I mean, I can kiiiinda see where that arc was going with the whole “Chaotic Neutral VS Chaotic Evil” thing, Discord used to be just a nuisance that kinda sorta helped on the side, then Cosmos came and added the evil aspect to it, of adding extra teeth to the chaos to gain some sadistic pleasure.
 
It could’ve worked had it been implemented properly. Having Discord snap his fingers and mass-mindrape everyone into believing that Cosmos has never existed and that all the lasting damage he’s unable to fix (including the Everfree Forest) is to be blamed on him being a bad dude, starting the process of everyone ganging up against him is… complete and utter bullshit. He’s essentially been whitewashed into being a stone martyr for all these years.

Yeah, that’s something I’d consider bullshit that doesn’t line up with who Discord was pre-reformation at all. Tirek probably wouldn’t have been able to do a fucking thing in terms of trying to persuade Discord to his side if that’s really how it went down back then, he probably wouldn’t have had the amount of enjoyment he got from brainwashing the Mane Six, he wouldn’t have planted those vines of his, and so on.

my big issue is it overall ruins him as a character. it’s too drastic of a change to him, and it negates all the things that actually made him an interesting character to begin with. not to mention, i think it’s a pretty big blow to the show’s whole “friendship is magic” thing: with discord being good all along, it means every single “reformed” character ever was actually just a good guy all along. it’s like they’re saying there actually is no hope of people actually changing for the better, which is a really depressingly cynical message.

One of the (many) things I liked about Beginning of the End (S9 premiere) was how it had two characters say this at one point:
 

 
Those two characters are what I’d consider to be close friends to the characters in question (unquestionably so with Fluttershy especially), and they are fully aware that they were indeed evil.

It was canon, but it was undone through time bending stuff when Starlight messed with the timeline and undid it from ever happening and nobody ever realized because they lost their memories of him ever being redeemed.

It is. Also, I think it might outlive the show and there might even be a spinoff anime show that picks up where FiM left off and is based on the Manga with the same art style and writers.

Because calling her “Miss Pommel” is weird and something they only could have gotten away with once. That said, I do think it’s genuinely bullshit that Hasbro is so afraid of a potential lawsuit that they’d rather kick Coco to the curb. I mean seriously, since when is referencing a person or a brand by giving a character a similar-sounding name grounds for legal action? Cartoons in particular do that sort of thing all the friggin’ time.
 
But as we’ve learned from Derpygate, Hasbro ain’t even remotely willing to even take the risk of something developing into a lawsuit, even if it would be a surefire win for them.
