So he’s distinct in that he was playing on an arcade machine? His design doesn’t stand out either, unless you think his little hat is distinctive.

Doctor Whooves Time Turner, Octavia, Bonbon, Lyra, none of them are any more or less distinctive than any other BG ponies of their time, and the first one is about as generically designed as they come. All references, details, and personality was fan based. I will give Muffin horse and Record pony passes as the former was an easter egg, and the latter was a distinct design and scene.

I think there’s several reasons why those ponies became the only ones with any real staying power.
 
A. The show was focused more on just ponyville back then and because of the budget they only had a set number of background pony designs, so the recurring ones got a lot of attention because they kept showing up among the relatively small cast.
 
B. The fandom was bigger back then.
 
C. There weren’t so many of them.
 
D. People looking for background ponies already have the original crop now.

But why just those ones in particular? Other ponies appeared in the same episodes as those four, some even in the exact same scenes, and some, like the flower trio, had plot related relevance and speaking roles, Amethyst Star/Sparkler even had a mini scene bouncing off a main character, and her popularity is minor at best. There’s really no reason that lyre CM mint unicorn became the most well known unicorn of that style other than because fans wanted her to.

Actually, it was because she sat like a human in Dragonshy. Bonbon because she was next to Lyra. Time Turner looked like the Doctor. The outlier appears to be Octavia…

I think for each of them it was little things that meant much more because the show was a lot smaller in scope back then. Every little thing in the background stood out, wheras nowadays scenes are so busy that fewer leave an impact.
 
Time Turner looks like David Tenant.
 
Lyra was the first pony to sit in that more human like stance.
 
Bon Bon was always seen with Lyra in the background, and her voice changed every time we saw her.
 
Octavia had that scene at the Gala.
 
I actually think not pinning down voices or intricate scene involvements helped them, because it let people fill in the blanks all on their own and they became somethng near totally fan made.

Time Turner looks the same as any other BG stallion with that mane and tail, and there are a lot of those. It’s no different than if I said “Applejack looks like this random chick as they’re both blonde”
 
The sitting was just as much a funny background scene as any other.
 
Bonbon was seen with dozens of ponies in the background, people just made connection mainly to one scene and ran with it.
 
There were lots of ponies at the gala band, and there was a pony in a S2 episode that basically looked like a male Octavia, how much fanart does he have? All of two images.
 
That’s rather contradictory “Having scenes makes people latch onto them and give them personality, but having scenes takes that away.”

The time turner comparison went a bit beyond hair colour. It was the mane colour, the coat colour (that matched the Doctor’s jacket), and his time based cutie mark
 
edit: I know what I said sounds contradictory, but to me there’s a difference between having a very plot relevant scene, and having a noticeable background scene where you have no lines.

Isn’t that a giant plot-hole we’re also suppose to just ignore  
“Plot hole” is just the term for “something that didn’t get explained in a movie someone didn’t like”, though; people are willing to overlook derps in a thing they like, so unless an omission completely breaks plausibility or defies the previously-established rules of the universe, then yeah, the expectation is that the audience is probably going to ignore it. People who liked the movie can make up their own explanations to suit themselves, and people who didn’t like the movie probably wouldn’t have started liking it just because one thing or the other was explained more thoroughly.
 
I think it just didn’t occur to them in the first movie to think up a role for Monkeyworld Sunset the way they eventually did for SciTwi, and now it’s quite likely they’re holding on to her as potential fodder for later stories.

Flurry Heart still looks like a terrible OC  
She looks like a G3 design to me, like the centerpiece of a Baby Flaps-a-lot toyline or something that reuses older foal molds but adds big honkin’ wings that flap when you shake the baby.

That entire scene fucked Luna and Celestia up because it implied they aren’t natural  
Celestia and Luna being brought to early Equestria by an irritated Star Swirl The Bearded is the biggest thing I wish the show would actually adopt from The Journal Of The Two Sisters, it would neatly lay most of the arglebargle about Flurrrt to rest.
 
Big Mac isn’t all that big  
Troubleshoes is a one-off character, but Mac is the class leader for the Large Stallion body template.

I actually thought the season 5 finale was paced perfectly  
I was with you right up until the ending. I thought the rest of it was very well put together though.

Actually, the ending of the season 5 finale and the pacing of it didn’t really bother me.

That recent image on Flash makes me dislike him more. I get defending your characters, I do that all the time but…christ.

I was feeling like that wasn’t right. it’s 2017; Flash hate is pretty much pointless at this point;
 
And i was right; the description is copied from the deviation itself and the image is from 2014, when that was a big thing. Still don’t see any point in uploading such obvious drama bait. Slowpoke drama bait, even.

Oh my bad. I guess my unpopular opinion is that Flash fans can be the worst when it comes to their character.
 
At least ponies like Glimmer have something going for her.
