The dumbest thing about Discord is that he was never actually reformed or redeemed at all. Everything he does in the show makes just as much sense if you forget that he was ever formally reformed, and frequently makes more sense if you see him as antagonistic or a villain.

I’m still disappointed they never did a Starlight/CMC episode. It’s like, the rationale is right there.

I tihnk his redemption was a decent idea, but I do also agree with the idea of making more use of his chaos. Perhaps he should open an amusement park? It would have been interesting if he had been the one behind the group’s Power Ponies experience - just like when Q sent the Enterprise crew to Sherwood Forest.

One of my alternate ideas for the S5 finale would have them as pivotal in her redemption - I wonder where they might have gone form there?

Can anyone explain me why Celestia decide to free and let the ponies redeemd Discord?

It’s simple enough if you think about it (and assume that breaking the statue will free him rather than killing him, or at least she can’t rule that out).
 
The only thing that can stop Discord by force are the Elements. However, this binding is broken whenever the Elements change Bearers. The Elements are currently borne by mortals. Ergo, he IS getting out sometime in the next century no matter what. So perphas better to try something risky now (when you have a full and fit team of Bearers) than wait.
 
For extra urgency, you could throw in her plans to ascend Twilight (which she couldn’t be sure wouldn’t kill her instead - great mentor, eh?) and possibly a premonition/prophecy that its’ now or never - the Elements won’t be on hand this time next year.

No, they’ve defeated him before and could do it again. The real reason that they decided to redeem him was that the writers were really lazy and wanted an excuse to bring his voice actor back.
 
Also, the whole “he’s too dangerous not to be friends with” thing that people keep using as justification for the worst episode of all time would’ve been literally the worst moral the show had ever had if that really were the idea behind it.

A Starlight episode with anyone in the mane 6 would’ve been a very welcome change, hell I would’ve liked another one with Twilight.

That’s not even remotely true, though. Discord is incapible of helping without making things worse, because he’s that much of an idiot. He has literally not used his chaos magic for good one single time, besides holding off Sombra, who he brought back in the first place. He is not a good person or useful in any way and Celestia is an idiot for thinking that the embodiment of chaos would be.

I wasn’t saying he couldn’t be defeated. Believing they could beat him again if he ever turned on them was part of the reason they even tried to turn him good.
 
But he is insanely powerful in a way the elements aren’t. the elements still need to be harnessed. Aimed like a gun. Discord can do whatever he wants at any time. He’s more versatile.

Compared to our world I’d say a lot worse. It’s ruled by an absolute authority who simultaneously has questionable at best leadership abilities along with complete freedom and no liability for their actions, the law enforcement of the world seems to amount to “you’re completely at the whims of whoever’s more powerful than you until someone even more powerful than them comes along”, the legal system amounts to “whatever any one random princess feels like doing at the time”, the citizens come under constant attack from monsters, near world-ending incidents happen regularly most of which are resolved by sheer dumb luck at the last minute after a ton of collateral damage, happiness is mandatory or the windigos will get you, and their belief of friendship comes off as more of a cultish ritual than merely a genuine belief for the sake of it. It’s like our world, but with less technology, less progressiveness, less rights, and all the problems and fears of our world dialed up by like a thousand. It makes for a great fantasy setting, but I’ll take our world over Equestria any day :P

Discord needed good episodes. I like him when they write him right, he’s a great trickster. The petty manchild we see in other eps is… unfortunate.

It’s just depressing that they chose the worst ideas for him and they made him act more like a bratty manchild as the show went on. Season 9 was when it looked like they were turning things around with him compared to What About Discord? and shudder A Matter Of Principals.

I don’t think he was ever written right after his original appearance. I feel so sorry for Lauren Faust, because he was one of her most creative characters, but they ruined him beyond repair.
