Unpopular opinion time

I still chuckle at Twilight imagining Starlight and Ember being total dudebros with each other under the excuse that “Who knows what their dynamic could be?”
 
Then when they did meet Ember’s all “You all look alike.”
 
Twilight’s not wrong yet, but so far her prediction ain’t right.

He’s a teenage dragon that’s acted like a jerk numerous times, never said he’s a saint or anything. But making him a genocidal, sociopath is too far. Especially when you have ponies like Applejack around saying “hi” and what not.
 
Man, those “God” Celestia fics are getting rarer and rarer as the series goes on. It used to be the norm that people used to think Celestia was the invincible paragon of the sun.

Also, as bad as Garble got in later episodes does anyone else think his behavior in the first half of Dragon Quest makes him the closest thing Spike has ever had to a male roll model? Which is pretty sad.

Are we only counting dragons? Otherwise I’d say Shining Armor and Big Macintosh count :D

He’s also got Discord as the poster child for “hey, don’t be that guy.”
 
(Even if he’s steadily becoming a better person, lol)

No just in general. At first Garble got the other dragons to stop harassing Spike, then taught him some dragon activities and got him accepted by the other teenage dragons, he even offered to keep teaching Spike about being a dragon. Rarity, Twilight and RD where even worried he would stay with them.
 
Comparitively Shining armor and Spike have such little interaction, aside from maybe sharing his love for comics with Spike I can’r really recall what kind of influence he’s had on him.And Big Mac just seems like a friend, not really an influence, heck in the last episode Big Mac should’ve took Spike’s advice.

That’s a good point I didn’t consider. You can be a role-model by showing how not to behave.

Ah yeah I see what you mean. I think Garble’s definitely a bad person but he does have virtues. He’s violent and destructive, but while he did rip on Spike he still gave the kid a chance to prove himself and readily accepted him when he did :D
 
And yeah, for Shining Armor I was mostly going on the assumption that they probably knew each other growing up. Mac I think would be a good role model though; they’re friends but Mac is older and a pretty good role model :D

Can we just please get more Spike/Mac/Discord episodes. That is by and far the best group of friends this show has turned out yet, like that could be the premise to an entire show: the adventures of a baby dragon, a pony, an ancient god of chaos, and the ties that bind them :D

Still disappointed that we got 2 O&O episodes and Shining Armor was in neither.

Is it bad to say that The Break Up Breakdown was a better episode for Ogres & Oubliettes than Dungeons & Discords?

Yeah Garble’s impact was sorta two folds, he showed him both the highs and lows of what he thought it means to be a dragon.
 
And yeah Shining Armor and Spike’s relationship is criminally underdeveloped given the history they should have together, just another thing I’ll choc up to the ever-growing list of why I dislike the Crystal Monarchs.

I’m not entirely convinced by this trio yet. Spike and Big Mac are a good pair but Discord usually seems really uninterested in them unless their playing OwO O&O, though from the ending of their last episode he does secretly care a bit about them.
 
And come to think of it Spike and Big Mac are pretty similar in their rolls to Twilight and Applejack, so theirs definitely a good dynamic to be had there.

Shining Armor honestly needs like a focus episode. Like, one where’s he’s not with his wife or daughter or sister. That guy’s never had an episode where he wasn’t just playing the role of “The Princess’s husband/father/brother”; he needs a role that focuses on his own character rather than just as an accessory to another :D

I love that dynamic, where Spike and Big Macintosh seem like legit close friends, while Discord is just that asshole who shows up at their door sometimes and drags them along on some bananas adventure, and while they’re not exactly close they do actually care about each other and usually end up having a really good time when he’s around XD

has applejack actually ever been shown eating an apple in the show?

I forgot it’s been years since I watched those episodes; it would of been funny and ironic if applejack lived and worked on an apple farm and sells apple related stuff and never actually ate one before that could of been a great plot for an episode maybe pears instead?

Speaking of eating, everyone thought it was weird the way Twilight scarfed those hayburgers in Twilight Time, however it made perfect sense to me. Not once had Twilight eaten a thing in the show up to that point, and any attempts she had made to eat had been interrupted (such as the sandwich in The Ticket Master, and an apple in ACW). Therefore, her stuffing her face there was simply her making up for three and a half seasons’ worth of starvation. ;P

He would have grown up in reasonably close contact with Shining Armor, Royal Guard, which sounds to me like a basis for his knightly chivalric fantasies and self-images over the years. Constantly seeing all the other Guards around the palace while getting paper-trained by Celestia or following Twilight around on her studies probably played a fairly important role in his sense of duty and responsibility, as well.
